So as yet another season finishes it's clear that the squad despite our league position was not able to compete for the league title. What do we need to compete for next season? (Given the manager has confirmed his stay and the fact there is already enough discussion about that elsewhere let's leave that to other threads)

GK- Cech should be here but Ospina and Chesney have uncertain futures. If both choose to leave we need a back-up keeper.

RB- Bellerin has the RB spot sealed. Debuchy seems likely to leave and Jenkinson seems extremely far from the standard required should we require him to play for an extended period. Chambers though is an option here and Coquelin has on occasion player at RB too.

LB- Monreal has recently signed a new deal while Gibbs future is up in the air. Reports have linked us to prospect Ben Chilwell and Raphael guerreiro.

CB- Koscielny should keep his place while mertesacker can compete for the second position but turns 32 this year. Given his age and Gabriel's consistently poor displays we could do well to sign a new player here.

CM- Flamini and Arteta are leaving, Wilshere is massively injury-prone while Ramsey has suffered from significant periouds out as well in addition to mixed displays. Finally all those coupled with Cazorla too turning 32 and it's clear that we need 1 definitely and possibly even 2 players here. Elneny came in January but he's neither defensive nor does his passing appear to be incisive (Average pass length is even shorter than Coquelins for instance). At the moment in my opinion he shouldn't be considered anything more than a squad filler.

Attacking midfielders- Ozil and Cazorla compete for the central advanced position with Iwobi having recently been given game time there as well.

Wingers- Sanchez is the only consistent option. Doubts surround Walcott, Chamberlain and Welbeck is out for the long term. Campbell has been decent when given time but you have to question him staying with his limited minutes. Iwobi seems a fine talent and currently starts here but we could do with a body.

Strikers- Giroud is turning 30 and on average gets about 14-15 league goals a season. The Walcott up-front experiment has been abandoned by Wenger and Welbeck is out for 9 months. Sanogo seems incapable of making an impression either in the Eredevisie or in the championship. Apkom too has been on the bench albeit for one of the better championship clubs. A must buy area.
