HomeSteak and under this manager we're now closer than we have been since the last time we won the league.
To hear some of you talk, it's like we have Pep's coneman in charge - and as Claudius says there is no acknowledgement of the distance we've travelled in a relatively short time, or how good we actually are.
Ange is a clown.
RocktheCasbah I think we all agree he has done a good job, just that I for one, as I cannot speak for others...don't see him as this genius like you lot do. Is it good? Yes, is it impressive? Maybe? Don't know, let's not act like he has not spent 800 mil and some of the highest wages in the league to do it. Sometimes reading stuff online about Arteta you would think he is managing Wolves or something. It's not that he took us over and just worked at it with what he had, no. He outspent all bar Chelsea to do it, and yeah, good job as you can see with Chelsea and United, there are others that can fuck it up, and he did not.
And this place is ok, no doubt, but go on reddit for example, you would think he is god, he does no wrong, Wenger was not as loved as Arteta is, for some reason, that I will never understand. Before the season started there was a conversation about who is better, who would you have Pep or Arteta, and you couldn't even suggest pep was the better manager...
I don't think I'm negative or unreasonable to say that come may 2026 he needs to have won the league or the CL or he needs to get fired. Keep in mind that by the end of that season he will be over 6 years and 1 billion in.
Good manager, but let's not act like there are not a good group of them out there that can create good teams after spending 800 mil.
You have to giggle when mega genius Klopp had Salah and Mane forced on him when he actually wanted Brandt and Gotze instead. He won the lottery.
RocktheCasbah it's not that short a time. Arteta celebrated 5 years in charge a few days ago. That's half a decade. No one's calling for his head but he's not beyond criticism either. The teams good now but we have fallen off a bit this season and we haven't won anything since the COVID season. Arteta took over a team that were 5th the season before and made it to a European final. It's not like we were where United are now. As much as things aren't so terrible they're not brilliant either. People just want us to take those steps to move us from nearly men to champions.
Claudius It's part of the same dynamic. We play in a very plotted out, elaborate way that lets us dominate space and create overloads etc. Our players have become accustomed to intricate schemes and extreme attention to detail which manifests itself positively in things like set pieces. Against your typical team, we can be overwhelming and score 5-6 goals. But against a savvy coach who can set up an effective mid block (to stymie our possession play) or low block (to reduce space in the box), we can struggle to create chances from open play.
So the fact that we score so many goals overall doesn't matter. The issue is with consistency in creating good attacking chances, which you need to consistently win games. We're better than Liverpool in some ways, I'm not saying the grass is greener with them, but it's clear when you watch them how complicated we make things sometimes. We need to have a capacity for simplicity, creativity, directness, exploiting the superior quality of our players, a bit of Wenger energy to be honest.
Claudius As a fan base we are the ultimate grass is greener collective.
Interesting. If this is true it would seem that fans of teams that don't win trophies are somehow envious of the teams that do.
Basically if we maintain the level we’re at we’ll win the league within the next 5 years. We are still improving too.
I’d also say that in my book we are favourites for the Champions League along with Madrid.
