QuincyAbeyie it isn't, but it could've been. I don't rate Raya (as a significant upgrade on Rammers) cos I've seen him in action, not because of what my mates say. 🙂

Anyway, I've seen it said the idea is for them to genuinely compete for the shirt and, I've said it before, nobody here is going to argue Raya isn't better than Matt Turner. Perhaps if Raya had been here last season, Aaron could have taken some time out when his wife had that terrible miscarriage.. I don't loved the signing, but let's see what happens.

Yeah but looking through Brentford forum he's universally praised and they said he will be missed. Really feels like Rams spot will be 2nd very soon as Arteta normally changes things quite fast like Rams over Leno

Excellent signing in my view. Either he performs better than Ramsdale and gets into the team or Ramsdale up his game and improves further. Win-win.

Ramsdale seems to be a good character but in top level sport your want the best players and competition is good for that. There is no need to worry about Ramsdale if he comes out the other side he'll likely have proven what many believe it hope he's capable of.If not then we will have likely improved that position. I don't know anything about Raya myself so would have to defer on that to others views about what they think he may offer.But competition is good I think you always want that in a top team as you try to improve.

There is that - but I also think this signing, the more I think of it, is specifically about Arsenal being able to play the way Arteta wants to whoever is in goal. The signing of David Raya gives us the chance to do so.

Better than dumping 90 mill on a striker who isn't any good and having no depth in midfield or in goal I'd say

Pepe LeFrits the striker market is so mad, I can't think of many in the 90m bracket that are a clear upgrade on jesus. I'd like us to punt on high potential like Evan Ferguson, who would be a handy understudy to jesus with a view to growing into first choice

My point is that complaining we're not allocating funds to a striker is only valid when there's somebody available that's significantly (at 90 mill, a valid criterion) better than Jesus. You don't just throw whatever funds you have available at your problem position unless it actually addresses the problem. Who can we get than will significantly improve on Jesus?

Have a feeling Dave’ll be first choice soon enough. Tet wants to raise the level of our possession play, and he probably likes his ability to play long, with Havertz in mind

lorddulaarsenal wait till you've watched him throw a few in before making that judgement... but yeah, perhaps planning to adapt the Raya- Toney axis to Havertz - Ravertz, if you will. It'd certainly add something to our play to be able to go long securely.

HomeSteak there’s a difference between paying £25m for a marginal improvement vs paying £90m for one. In fact I doubt you’d even get a striker on par with Jesus this summer for £90m

Havertz and Xhaka aren’t really comparable - although they could notionally play at LCM, they’ll be used very differently.

Not difficult to find someone better than Nketiah. In fact 90m would quite easily get Toney imo.

Clrnc Jesus’ back up should be Trossard and then Havertz. Nketiah will probably get game time to rest the first team but, as seen on Sunday, he won’t play in a meaningful fixture

Mirth Yeah exactly, which might not suffice because there will be many games we need a proper number 9 and an option B.

I think goonerIC argument is for

A) Havertz+Raya

B) Toney

One could argue B has more tangible benefits than A in a world where it's either this or that. But for me I think if we want another striker for 90m now we can just buy him. It's not like we have no money
