Now for Tierney and Zaha.
Dani Ceballos
Coombs wrote:A Xhaka-Ceballos double-pivot will be very creative and very progressive.
we should play with those 2 ahead of torreira in a midfield 3. because those 2 alone arent going to be enough on the defensive side of the ball. use the barca triangle with a deep CM and 2 more attack minded CMs. then 2 proper wingers and a striker and we might be onto something.
Torreira is not suited to a deep-lying midfield role. If we're playing a 3, Xhaka should be in the middle, flanked by a couple of runners like Lucas and Dani.
If we play a double-pivot with Xhaka and Ceballos, then we should have an AM/CF that is more of a presser than a passer with Auba ahead of him. Someone like Willock, or even Laca. I think if we play the inverted triangle, Laca will have to play up top or there'll be nobody to hold it up, and Auba will end up out wide.
torreira isnt big and strong like a typical deep lying CM, but hes a better defender than xhaka and far more mobile. xhaka's complete lack of mobility is the reason i dont want him being the deepest of our midfielders.
But that's where you need mobility the least. Torreira is wasted fixed to the middle of the pitch. You can't just run off to the byline when you play deepest, you need to maintain the structure of the team. You're the reference for the CBs as well as your midfield partners, I'm not sure a Torreira type makes sense there at all.
Torreira/AMN—Xhaka/Guendouzi—Ceballos/Willock
Maybe an inverted midfield trio with Torreira and Xhaka behind Ceballos.

if we play with 3 CBs, i think maybe xhaka is okay there, but with 2, his lack of pace and lack of defensive ability means we're going to concede a ton of goals like we did last season.
i dont think torreira is wasted playing as a sweeping deep lying CM. he'd actually offer protection to the defense when our fullbacks are way up to the pitch.
if he were better going forward and a real goal threat, id agree that maybe hes wasted there, but he doesnt offer a ton in the final 3rd, and i think his vision and mobility would offer more in a deeper role.
the big problem is trying to find a spot for xhaka since its clear hes not going anywhere. his negatives far outweigh his positives, imo
Talk that we are going for a permanent deal but where Emery says “line” I think he means “loan”
Emery also saying he sees Ceballos as an 8 or 10 and that's where he'll use him.
I wonder what this means for Özil?
Personally think we’ll see a rejuvenated Mesut this season

he can captain the reserves this season

Don't say that or you'll get Arsenal fans getting heart attacks or suffering nervous breakdowns.

Ozil's gonna play Europa League next season.

If he'll press, he'll be excellent.
Those who know him, how good is he at pressing as we all know both Ozil and Xhaka are absolutely shite at it so he will have to do it.

he doesn't seem like the type to fire up if his position is under threat, so we probably won't see much change in what he offers. he may get pushed over to europa/cup duties, if we ever get to a full complement of our attacking options
I hope he doesn't pull a Kawhi Leonard on us.

What's wrong with winning it all and moving on? I think Leonard will be remembered very fondly in Toronto.

join arsenal for 1 season, win an epl title, then leave? i'll bloody take it
This is amazing, never thought we had a legit chance for him. Hopefully we have a successful season and can convince him to stay put
Basketball has only 5 players on the court so every player has much more influence than any player on a football pitch positive (Kawhi MVP performances) or negative (Kevin Durant's injury).
Ceballos is not a Kawhi as he cannot break into the RM team so the dream is dead before before it starts.
"Dani Ceballos doesn’t want to leave Madrid permanently so opted to go on a year loan. He will have his Arsenal medical tomorrow"
That’s fine. If you watched us last year, even with Ramsey, you noticed how desperate we were for a proper ball player in our passive midfield. So even if he returns maybe he leaves a blueprint for what we need to do.
Emery has guaranteed him 40 games this season.
Is it impossible to demand this from teams taking our players on loan?
Could have got Nelson much further than he is now and possibly saved Gnabry for us?
That’s an incredible guarantee when you have your own players to develop. Wonder how that will go down in the squad. Ceballos talent is unquestionable but that statement leaves one wondering about our whole development plan. It makes sense for Emery, he has one year left on his contract. His incentive is self preservation
When we take stock at the end of the summer, I suspect we will still see a club that is but a raft without an oar being tossed about in the waves.
Gazza M wrote:join arsenal for 1 season, win an epl title, then leave? i'll bloody take it
I mean it more in terms of being a superb player for a year then leaving us. Ceballos is not good enough to be the reason we win the league.

This is ridiculous. No option to buy either.

This will be unpopular in certain quarters, but what I’ve seen of this guy makes me feel like this is the long term upgrade on Ramsey I would want. Better defines the position for me. I’m hoping that Real are just struggling to define a price for him and both he and Real would leave the door open to a permanent transfer. The first step is having him at the Emirates though
Some reports in Spain the player still wants to come back to R.Madrid so he wasn’t keen on any option to buy in the loan. Some reports also say Perez has promised Arsenal that he they will sit down next summer and discuss the possibility of a sale. Obviously I don’t know for sure but when it comes to selling R.Madrid if they no longer want the player will usually sell for a fair price. I see this situation similar to Kovacic at Chelsea. As long as by next summer the player wants to stay I think a deal could be done.
So what do we make of his comments that he doesn't want to leave RM permanently.
I also don't think Kovacic is a good comparison with him being Croatian vs a fiercely patriotic Spaniard.
Some stats:
Özil didn't want to leave Madrid either in 2013. Nobody does usually
Good player, but the 40 game guarantee is a joke.
Torriera, Guendouzi, will they even get 40 games themselves? I mean factoring in injuries and bad form, it is ridiculous.
Willock etc will be thinking, “what?”
The fact we do not have a option to buy is bad news as well.
All that said, if he does live up to the ratings and hype of the posters’ views on here, he would add something that we are really missing.
Difference is they didn't want Ozil anymore so we bought him outright.
They also had little use for Kovacic as they have much better players in his position.
This guy has the option of returning.
Real Madrid doing very well without him is probably the key to us retaining his services.
Emery should be guaranteeing fuck all. What if he's shit? He still plays regardless? I'm going to choose to not believe that rumor.
Shouldn't be hard if he doesn't get injured.
Our central midfield is weak.
if he's as good as alleged, then he might end up playing 40 games on merit. our midfield is pretty poor
The thing is even if Emery told him hes getting 40 games unless hes killin he'll be on the bench. I'm sure he promised Suarez more than 3 sub appearances. No way emery plays dani if hes playing poorly.
Hopefully he gets on well here and we get to sign him in a year or he goes back to real and gets upset by the lack of game time and we get him a year after.
Either way, it’s better to have him this season than not. Let’s worry about next summer, next summer.
A year is a long time in football.
Oh, and of course he will play 40 games, none of the other midfielders can touch him.
Gazza M wrote:if he's as good as alleged, then he might end up playing 40 games on merit. our midfield is pretty poor
My thoughts exactly. I saw the vids earlier (didn't know him very well) and I figure he'll just play. We currently don't have that quality, and we certainly need it.
We aren't getting him here to groom him. If he gives us a better chance at CL qualification and hence more money and better players then so be it. He gives us a better shot than our youngsters. I am not complaining even if he has to go back next season. The onus is on him. He has to impress RM. If he gives his all and drags us to top 4 then it won't matter.
Anyhow, he alone won't change anything. We need reinforcements to our backline else not much will change. This is a good start in my opinion.
