Can't see Arsene signing more than one player in January (if any at all) so - is Vertonghen good enough that if Arsene were to make a single signing in January it should be him?

Of course there is a difference between Madrid/Barca and us, but the principle still stands. Mertesacker didn´t sign thinking he may be third choice only a couple of months later. He isn´t, yet, but he may very well be when Jenkinson/Sagna come back. Gervinho didn´t sign to be a player off the bench. I am pretty sure he was until Nasri was sold though.

My point was that a lot of players go to clubs fully confident that they will be first choice, if not immediately then within a few months. I think most players think they are better than they really are.

Yes, players back themselves but they also go where they will play.

Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don´t.

I'd love for Bastos to come in as competition for the wide left positions. Can't see Wenger doing it for exactly that reason, though.

A striker who can play wide would be great actually. As opposed to a wide player who can play striker.

I've seen him play for Montpellier a couple of times. He's a good player. Having a great time in Ligue 1 at the moment. Leading both the scoring and assist charts, or was up until recently at least. Not sure he can play wide though. He looks like a typical centreforward to me.

Been thinking about Vertonghen and have changed my mind. Who knows when we'll see Santos again, Arsenal ankle injury never seem to heel fast.

Thing about Vertonghen is that he is more of a centrehalf who can fill in there like Vermaelen. Even then Centre-mid is more his second position.

I think we need to buy for there though, but I guess Wenger will use Vermaelen as cover for as long as he has to.

Buying a proper LB means Wenger giving up on Gibbs. Wish he would, but can´t see it.

Santos injury really fucks it up. He was beginning to look good and i really thought he could help us a lot this season. bah!

I think Wengers is gonna try for lucho gonzalez again. Song is as important as Robin and I get the impression that AW does not trusts Couqlin that much. Him a striker and Gotze should be Wengers top targets IMO.

Though we still lack a quality backup for Chesny.....🙁

I said I think he can be an excellent left-back. 🙂 Looks to me like he's got everything needed to succeed in that role, but Captain is right that it's not his usual position. Wenger doesn't seem to bothered about stuff like that, though. Position and current performances are secondary to him. His main concern when he decides to buy someone is the qualities of said player.
