We barely got the ball to our front line, when we did it was mostly to Madueke who didn't get any balls into the box. No striker is going to do much in those circumstances.

I won't hold yesterdays game against him, the likes of VDV has dealt with far better players than him and Liverpool were set up to give nothing away. Ekitike didn't really do much either yesterday and I think he's a good player.

Liverpool away is a tough task and he lacks match fitness, but I was disappointed by his movement. Madueke had a really nice cross, but Gyokeres was too late, and Ødegaard had a really nice little pass to him that he looked nearly oblivious to. I also thought he angled his runs completely wrong relative to Martinelli and Madueke. Very disappointing so far.

However, the market for strikers is ridiculous. Sesko has looked terrible. Ekitike has scored a couple of goals, but has looked very average so far. £70 mill for Woltemade is insane. £130 mill for Isak even worse.

Weird that a striker of that ilk can time his runs so poorly or not make them at all.

I think Gyokeres is in the same place as all the strikers we've seen come in to the league in that it's not clear if he's going to be the answer and deliver. He has a very poor touch and the rest of his game isn't really at a particularly high level so the goals to get us 1-0 etc are going to be crucial. It was nice he could get his goals against Leeds but he's not there to top up the score line in the games where we are likely going to win but to break the deadlock and potentially get the match winning goal in those games it hasn't worked for us. That's where he'll be judged.

He was being written off quite often and quite vocally those days. Don't remember being on any forums back then but at school and on Sky Sport he was getting ripped all the time.

Strange because there were not as many televised games back then either so we'd be lucky to get a full game's worth more than once or twice a month in the PL. All we had was 5 Live. Think it just mainly trickled down from the commentators and pundits after games and we were too young to know any better.

That said, some of us still don't know any better despite and still hang off of every pundit's words.

The same pundits were hyping him up when we signed him. It's boom or bust, there is no in between for many of them so it goes both ways.

What was actually wrong with Pires' game in his first few months with us? I've always known about the criticism but the details have never been explained.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert I was up in Leeds at the time, so not 100% sure, but I think he was perceived as very lightweight and not strong enough for the league.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert as RTC said he was not up to speed with the physicality of the Prem and got brushed off the ball too easily. It wasn’t until we played ironically away from the Prem, Lazio away (where Vieria got sent off) in the CL, where he had his first real good game coming on as a sub (and scoring his first goal with us late in the game) and the rest is history.

Cheers both. Yeah, I actually remember his goal at Lazio, was a belter. Just couldn't remember specifics of his overall game in his first season.

The next season, he became one of the best players in Europe as we all know.

I also remember that interestingly in the Confederations Cup in 2001 (end of his first season), he partnered Vieira in central midfield for France, and was brilliant!
