Mirth Yep. The two players in England that I thought were similar in profile to Gyökeres this summer were Delap and Mateta. United pursued the former but not the latter even though he's the better of the two. Only reason of course is that Delap is younger.

Odegaard plays on the other side of the pitch and his relationship with Saka is a staple of our attack. Eze and Gyokeres on the opposite flank suddenly gives us a dual pronged attack. We need Odegaard and Eze in the same team.

I don't think you can play transitional football in the Prem with this guy. He is not going to beat PL defenders for pace, and he gets pushed off the ball as well. He has his place for sure, great instinctive striker's movement and finishing, but at this level he's really only going to excel when you shorten the pitch and have him work in those short bursts of movement that he does very well.

It is very tough to have Havertz out with this stretch of big games to start the season. Matches like today are exactly when you need him.

This is a bit harsh, his best moment today was when he shrugged off Van Dijk and laid it off. He's capable of doing it, but this isn't Portugal, there will be fewer soft defenders and fewer openings. Slim pickings for the likes of Ekitike and Salah in this match as well, so we need to bracket the doom a little bit.

Gurgen it's a good thing this forum wasn't around when Bobby Pires joined - he'd have been written off after 3 weeks, let alone the 3-4 months it took him to acclimatise.

Yeah he certainly doesn’t look to be in the condition he was we he faced us last season. Did ok today - Van Dijk and Konate are probably the pairing most suited to the challenge he brings

We are not utilizing him / his strengths. Still not creating room for or exploiting the channel runs. If we do not adapt our game, we have essentially set 65m on fire, or whatever it was he cost us. Only good news is we likely won't be shelling out for any goals scored related bonuses. :-/

I won't hold yesterdays game against him, the likes of VDV has dealt with far better players than him and Liverpool were set up to give nothing away. Ekitike didn't really do much either yesterday and I think he's a good player.

He flattered to deceive. Seems like ko ate and Virgil van Cunt had him marshalled pretty easily. You can see he was shocked Ode found that pass to him - he wasn’t ready for that run. He’ll get used to it (hopefully!)

Burnwinter I think this has been the worry, his goal against Leeds came when we were 2-0 up a different game state. But can he give us the difference in harder games like today that's the unknown and my main worry about him. It's not clear yet where he's at and today or last week you can't draw any significant conclusions about what he will do

We barely got the ball to our front line, when we did it was mostly to Madueke who didn't get any balls into the box. No striker is going to do much in those circumstances.

not the game for strikers to thrive, so I'm not making any judgements. I think eze will unlock gyokeres a bit more as well. let's revisit in 2-3 months and see where things are at

Liverpool away is a tough task and he lacks match fitness, but I was disappointed by his movement. Madueke had a really nice cross, but Gyokeres was too late, and Ødegaard had a really nice little pass to him that he looked nearly oblivious to. I also thought he angled his runs completely wrong relative to Martinelli and Madueke. Very disappointing so far.

However, the market for strikers is ridiculous. Sesko has looked terrible. Ekitike has scored a couple of goals, but has looked very average so far. £70 mill for Woltemade is insane. £130 mill for Isak even worse.

Weird that a striker of that ilk can time his runs so poorly or not make them at all.

I think Gyokeres is in the same place as all the strikers we've seen come in to the league in that it's not clear if he's going to be the answer and deliver. He has a very poor touch and the rest of his game isn't really at a particularly high level so the goals to get us 1-0 etc are going to be crucial. It was nice he could get his goals against Leeds but he's not there to top up the score line in the games where we are likely going to win but to break the deadlock and potentially get the match winning goal in those games it hasn't worked for us. That's where he'll be judged.

He was being written off quite often and quite vocally those days. Don't remember being on any forums back then but at school and on Sky Sport he was getting ripped all the time.

Strange because there were not as many televised games back then either so we'd be lucky to get a full game's worth more than once or twice a month in the PL. All we had was 5 Live. Think it just mainly trickled down from the commentators and pundits after games and we were too young to know any better.

That said, some of us still don't know any better despite and still hang off of every pundit's words.
