Burnwinter Financially this has become a very flattering deal for our transfer team when you consider which players have gone for what money just in the past few weeks.
Said it in another thread recently too, but looking at things from Sporting's perspective you can certainly understand why they're so testy and why Varandas has kicked up such a fuss. To them, this is like if we were forced to sell Saka to Real Madrid for about half of what he's worth, with a big chunk of the fee tied up in conditionals, all while the Real fans moan about how he's only got Premier League experience and won't be able to get past the more technically able defenders in Spain. It's not enough having to give him away, we're getting insulted while doing it too.
I know it doesn't quite work like that: you're only worth what the market says you're worth, etc, but from a comparative perspective they see players who are nowhere near this guy going for similar fees, both to other clubs and to Arsenal themselves, and I'm sure they resent it. Us buying Madueke actually became a bit've news story because they just can't believe we're throwing similar money on a player like that (no personal judgment; I kinda like Manueke).
