Gyokeres will not be signed in time for that game, but Arsenal have been putting plans in place for the 27-year-old to arrive just in case a deal could be done, with the focus always on him being involved in time for the meeting with Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31.

As they say, doctor, heal thyself. I suggested the angst about Arsenal's approach to, and competence regarding the Gyökeres deal was overheated and lacked imagination.

Here's the angst I was talking about:

If this is coming down to a couple of million Euros because we want to have it structured a certain way it really is ridiculous. A couple of million is a rounding error in the grander scheme of things, or a loan fee for Nuno Tavares. It don't think it would impact the player's thinking, but it would not look good to Gyorkeres and his team if they are forgoing significant sums and we are penny-pinching over payment structures.

The comments about the €5m becoming €10m if you concede too early don't wash with me. It's straightforward to make an offer that you agree to those terms but failure to accept results in the previous offer being the only one on the table. The club are clearly fighting this through the media. Awareness of such an offer also increases pressure on Sporting to accept as everyone knows they can only push it so far.

You’re being ridiculous. I’ve acknowledged points the points you’ve raised and said why I disagree with you, yet you’re being unnecessarily dismissive and condescending.

I'd otherwise liked to have addressed those comments, the ‘angst’ which you’ve laid out, but I see no point continuing this further.

the impression i always get from watching him is a a striker who is in control of their final action. when he's approaching goal, he knows where hes planning to put the finish ahead of time. even with the misses in the comp above, his decision-making was correct and the shot was only slightly off target or blocked. and for every miss, there's usually a goal from a similar position in the same game. you never really got that sense with havertz or jesus, both of whom give a sense that they're not as single-minded in their choice of finish

flobaba I have doubts about this myself, but would you agree that if Martinelli has a 20/21-like season it would be good enough? I definitely think so. The sad thing is that I thought he'd kick on from there and even improve on it, while now we're all hoping he'll return to his level from when he was 21 years old.

QuincyAbeyie i was teasing a little bit, but I do expect the signing of Gyokeres (and hopefully Eze) to finally put an end to the "isolated Martinelli" narrative. Seriously speaking, it's make or break season at Arsenal for the Brazilian. I would expect that if he's been playing, let's call it "handicapped", these past couple of years then he should, theoretically, simply explode this season with the range of options and tactics we will be able to deploy to get the most out of him. I expect him to produce SLN (Saka Like Numbers), while Saka goes on to another level, or at least maintains his current level /output. Basically I expect our wingers to be double-double (double figures in goals and assists) machines this season and going forward, if they stay fit.

If by mid season we are having to bench Martinelli for Madueke, or take him out of games due to him not having a positive impact I expect him to be sold off next summer.

Qwiss maybe, maybe not. But he is the reason for the entire bullshit saga with Sporting. Amateur hour is what it sounds like from the outside looking in. He would only be forgoing that sort of cash under a lot of pressure, and because he would know he has no choice
