I don't think Cesc was at Thierry's level as a player, but he did carry the team on his shoulders in a way I don't think Thierry was ever really prepared to do once the Invincibles were broken up.

Wasn't being fully serious by the way. It was a greatly exaggered statement to show my disappointed if that would have happened. You could bring in Mourinho/Ten Hag/whoever and I'd still watch us. It would take something catastrophic for me to stop watching us after 30 years of emotional investment 😂.

They both carried the team on their shoulders, yes. However Thierry left us after giving us everything and was like 29 or something. Fabregas left us at like 23/24 at the start of his prime as soon as Barca seriously came in for him.

I think I've had this convo before with Speedster but I don't give credit to Fabregas for staying those 2 years between 08/09 and 10/11 because Barca were never prepared to make a bid for him. Until they did, which is when he pushed his way out, which is where my dislike for him comes from.

You should credit him for coming here for free and staying 8 seasons. He would have had tons of offers every season as he was one of the very best young players in the world. Anyone who kicked for a move in the era got one so he clearly could have as well. It takes a lot of mental gymnastics to think he couldn't have left sooner.

We signed him as a 16 year old. Gave him an opportunity at one of the best clubs in the world at the time with some of the best players. I'm not sure but I also think I remember we took advantage of the fact we could give him a pro contract when Barca couldn't. It wasn't charity why he joined us. He obviously saw us an opportunity to thrive and develop among some WC players and under Arsene who was one of the most respected managers in football then.

For this, yeah, if he wanted to just leave for the sake of leaving he could have. He only wanted to go to Barca though. I think it takes much more mental gymnastics to convince yourself that Barca were coming in for him and he was turning down every year when the truth is all Barca did was try to unsettle him for a potential future purchase on the cheap.

Aside from that for everything else we've been over this before. Clearly we have differing opinions on this. You aren't gonna convince me he could easily have joined Barca and instead turned them down to stay loyal. And obviously I'm not going to be able to convince you that he jumped ship the first chance he got to join them.

Again, Barca never made a single bid for him in that time prior to the summer he left. If they did and he turned them down that would be something. But they didn't, and as such he didn't. That is a fact.

You could have that negative view about any player. He literally could have gone anywhere and chose us. What more can you ask for.

And he gave everything every game.

You weren't our DoF during that period. You don't know what talks were held. Like when RVP says he wasn't offered a contract here. He clearly said he didn't want one to not be handed a formal one. Negotiations are informal and then the lawyers trash out the details. He easily could have agreed a deal with Barca earlier and then forced a move. Cesc was willing to keep playing through the difficulties here. He could have left earlier for he wanted to and Barca were super high spenders during that period. If he came out in the papers and kicked for a move you'd be mad to think they wouldn't not have made a bid.
