Wenger's looked cautious because he was spending a lot less compared to his rivals. Arteta's looks extravagant because he qe regularly end up with one of the highest net spend each season. Yeah, inflation may have gone up but it's all relative to what others are doing.

Under Arsene 2013-2018 we were 3rd in net spend with €245m, less than half of United with €570m and less than a 3rd of City with €724m.

In terms of gross spendind, we were 5th with €460m spent. That's behind Liverpool (€589), just over half of United (€811) and Chelsea (€757), and less than half of City (€960).

Things are not the same in terms of spending for Arsene and Mikel, even after being adjusted for inflation, because it fails to consider the spending relative to rivals.

These figures need to be adjusted for nett change in estimated squad value (or some more sophisticated thing). Our squad was valued at about €700m in summer 2020 and is now worth €600m more.

Henry is right. He clearly doesn't like Arteta but it doesn't change the fact that he is right. Henry has been there and done it for club and country - he knows what it takes and we need Arteta to start being more aggresive. We have the squad to do it so let's just fucking do it.

I don't think that's clear. From what I've seen of his comments past couple of seasons, Thierry's been consistent—he praises what Arteta's achieved but says a major trophy should be expected by now.

That's what most fans think? It's what I think.

And then of course Thierry amps up the tension a smidgen because hey, he's working in media, and he has to act like he respects Jamie Carragher for a living.

There are a few more negative variations out there:

TambourineMan I think people need to understand the mentality of guys who've been to top of the game and who've won things for Arsenal. They don't accept excuses or second best, their single minded view of sport is what made them successful. So I don't think its a "he hates Arteta" situation, its just that he expects more. Just listen to him talk about pressure "its a pressure that you want". So he doesn't think putting expectations on an Arsenal manager is a bad thing, he sees it as something that should be welcomed.

Bro I'm I remember we had some absolute trash defenders on in that game. For sure I remember Luzhny playing RB, Stephanovs playing CB, and maybe even Grimandi playing as well. Yeah, no way we should be losing that much but that was a severely depleted defence.

But either way, in response to @Cannon , Arsene had a load of goodwill in the Bank by winning us the double in his first full season then obviously another double and the invincible season (even ignoring FA Cup lone winning seasons) and even then he was hounded out of the club with people being Wenger out from as early as 2011 or so.

Well for one, that was happening. Merse, Alan Smith and numerous others were on the tv all the time ripping into Arsenal and talking about how Arsene is living in the past and his style of football isn't cut out for the modern game etc, etc.

In any case, you would not see many former players ripping into their former managers on TV, and given Arsene was in charge for so long, almost all Arsenal adjacent pundits on TV played under him at one point or another. Same would go for Arteta if he somehow found himself at the club 10 years from now and the pundits and former Arsenal tv personalities were the likes of Gabriel, Raya, White etc (all those who will probably have retired by 2035 for example). Even more so if he's won trophies with them as their manager.

I just know a good thing when I have it and I know when someone is trying to bullshit me. I’d rather have Henry say Arteta deserves a lot of praise for where we are than pile on the ‘no excuse BS’ like other pundits. Maybe he is only saying it because he really wants Arsenal to win it but I doubt it. Maybe he could have said it in a different way, like look at where manager round robin and false sense of entitlement has led Manchester United, but then he too has to get paid as a pundit. How come no one ever talks about pool plonking in 300 mill on top of a winning side and should have no excuses?

Also regarding that 8-2. If we had money to get five players after that loss then we had money to get players in before that loss. Playing Arshavin upfront so we can get Chamakh for free, persisting with almunia because we won’t pay 1 mill extra for Mark Schwarzer, waiting till end of the window so we could save a few weeks wages, these were crimes! Some of you may have forgotten those ‘glory’ years but I haven’t.
