Defenders cost less as a total package so it makes sense why deals are easier to conclude when we're looking for value in every deal. Attackers cost more as a total package so the club starts bartering like they're in a bazaar in Marrakech. I don't agree with it but that's what's happening.

We have been chasing Isak and Sesko for a couple of seasons now and the summer we finally land a striker, we don't go for either because we don't want to pay up, despite both leaving. Instead, we went for the cheapest option who previously was written off as a target.

Similarly, we went for Madueke who was also the cheapest option and refused to pay the money for Eze or Rodrygo.

Cost 16m cheaper for one - probably got a favourable payment schedule to boot - lower wages as well.

jones no jones, all I'm saying really is I don't believe that Arteta prioritised signing Calafiori over signing an attacker last summer.

It's clear Arsenal tried to sign Sesko, he didn't believe he was good enough to replace Kai Havertz and we didn't have a back up plan. That sounds like an Edu problem, not an Arteta one.

I was listening back to a Daily Cannon podcast I did after we lost 3-0 at Spurs in 2022 - we were trying to find the positives in defenders like Rob Holding, Cedric and Nuno Tavares. It really shouldn't be that surprising that Arteta has spent money on the defence - especially when he arrived to find players like Chambers, Mustafi, Luiz and Sokratis here.

RocktheCasbah he didn't find Cedric he signed him and then gave him a four year contract. He also extended Luiz and tried to do it again, he even tried to extend Mustafi. It's not like he was detached from the shambles we had in the back. A better coach gets a tune out of Tavares as well, seems shouting at him like a lunatic on TV might not have been conducive to that but his time at Marseille and now Lazio showed there's a player there.

How is it an Edu problem when all the players we get are ones Arteta asked for explicitly? There's no way we're signing anyone he doesn't want and they see game time. Last season we were chasing a goal and he'd rather throw on White than Sterling and that one was reported as an Edu signing. This specificity bollocks is what kills our windows - hallmark of a good manager is he can work with a variety of players, some of might even be flawed at that.

Because it was Edu's job to sign players, it's Arteta's job to coach them. Arteta can't coach a forward we haven't signed. Raheem Sterling wasn't used last season unless absolutely desperate not because Edu signed him, but because he wasn't very good.

I find the idea that Arteta should carry the can for last summer's transfer failures bizarre given Edu's departure from the role so early into the last campaign, but if you want to pin it on him go ahead I guess.

At the end of the day I just think Edu should be blamed for anything bad and Arteta praised for anything good.

I'm just asking this question: do you really think last summer Edu had a striker (the same striker the entire world knew we needed) lined up and Mikel Arteta said, "no, I don't want him, we need to sign another left back first"?

Arteta was definitely the decision maker, edu was the one who followed orders, like with Aubameyang, arteta was done with him and it was up to Edu to sell him at any cost, in the end paying to get him out of the contract.

Cedric? At least you remember him. We once had Matt Debuchy on our books. That window was one of our worst in recent history. Only salvaged by the signing of one Alexis Sanchez.

Included stalwarts like Gabriel Paulista, Calum Chambers, David Ospina, and Danny Welbeck. Smh

RocktheCasbah I think Ospina had a good World Cup with Colombia so we were quite pleased with that signing. But then he played for us and showed he couldn't command a matchbox let alone a football one.

Welbeck was a good player IMO. I liked him and still have alot of time for him. Mini hero for the goals against United too and saying fuck that muted celebration bullshit.

Lukazan and he was brilliant in the cup final in 2017. I liked him, I just wish we'd seen more of him.

Lukazan He was a striker who did everything right except for score goals lol. One of Fergies most trusted players, you could send him out to do a job and he would follow those instructions to a tee. Work endlessly and completely unselfish, he was like a dream player for a coach who needs one guy to sacrifice himself for the team.

RocktheCasbah He basically stopped Chelsea from playing that game, stopped their build up play from deep and they struggled to build any kind of pressure on us because their rhythm was so disrupted. Was a tactic I saw Fergie use in big games against us and the CL, stopping the ball from moving freely without pressure in the middle. Welbeck and Park were his trusted players to carry this out!

Also a fan of Welbeck never would have got past Man U at OT in the FA cup quarter final without him.

He's still doing bits for Brighton too. Aged like a fine wine.

Panda Welbeck was one of those players who was pretty bad when he played but who's legend grew while he was injured. "Oh if only we had Welbeck", then he'd come back, do feck all, get injured again, rinse and repeat.
