RowJimmy Yeah it is a wild 1 but if we are languishing in or around 8th at Christmas which isn't beyond the realms of possibility it will be incredibly toxic and maybe the players will start thinking they can't be bothered with him and his ways anymore haha.

jones if you trust the athletic, Edu & board felt after losing the Bayern CL tie that we need the "x factor" in attack. Arteta responded by fighting them for Califiori. It was reported by multiple people that Arteta was fighting for him while Edu & staff were saying we need something else.

jones I think edu got the defensive transfers over the line because the fees and wages are a fraction of the price.

RocktheCasbah its pretty clear Edu made mistakes in this regard when you see Berta come into the same situation with Sesko and almost immediately moving on to Gyokeres. You need more buy in from the player to get these moves done. Seskos lack of ambition meant Leipzig have been able to get way over his worth for him. If'd had said "only Arsenal" we'd have got him for €60m-ish. He was happy to have a bidding war and end up at a team who finished 16th last year instead.

HomeSteak yeah, but I think it's equally common knowledge that was not the intention going into the summer. If you want to believe we made no attacking signing because of Calafiori, then that's absolutely your right. But i don't think you are right.

Qwiss Edu was to some extent Joorabchian's man. Joorabchian was his agent and has influenced his career trajectory after football. No need to mention Joorabchian is a bit of a piece of shit. Willian and Luiz were Joorabchian players.

Based on my reading, Edu's departure as our sporting director reflects thwarted ambition—there are credible if surprising reports he aimed to be Arsenal CEO—as well as poor sales that meant KSE didn't want Edu to overbid on Šeško last summer, and lastly the Joorabchian-Marinakis connection having opened the door to tripling his income at Forest.

Arteta is a left back pervert but the fans are kidding themselves if they think Edu fell out with him over that.

Speedster Calafiori was not cheap at close to 50m and with negotiations proving very complicated due to Basel getting a massive chunk of the fee from Bologna, the transfer took months to finalise.

Not like it's only 100m+ attackers who could improve our team either.

maybe it's all true and arteta did fight for the signings he wanted and edu lost out on battles and was just told by the kroenke's to get the man what he wants, look at his on the field results. but arteta certainly would have lost credibility on that front with them and now berta has come in with more power to tell arteta no: here is the striker we can get in on time and on budget. here is your two footed defender. here is your left-footed left wing option.

from what I have read, Gyokeres was considered a "Secondary Tier" player by the recruiting staff and Edu wasn't keen on Madueke... Berta has come in and thats all changed... He has had a big say in getting those 2.

jones how is an initial fee of £33m close to £50m? I'm 48 years old, that's close to 50. I wasn't close to 50 when I was 33, I was close to 30.

I'm all for criticising Arteta and the club when necessary, but this seems a particularly bad faith argument.

I'm not sure I believe the 33 rising to 42 figures either, German Swiss and Italian media all reported he cost €45m + €5m in bonuses. The noises at the time were that despite being sold for only 4m initially he's become Basel's all time record sale because of the 50% sell on fee and 16.5m pounds wouldn't be sufficient for that.

He's the most expensive Italian defender ever, and it wasn't just a serious fee there was a lot of interest in him that needed fending off plus complex negotiations. Are you genuinely arguing that we are not extremely trigger happy for our backline with all this evidence but move at glacial speeds when it comes to reinforcing our attack? Forget defenders we signed as many goalies as we did attackers in five years ffs.
