I'd love to live in the dream world everyone appears to be in with thinking there are better managers that will come in and maintain Arteta's standards tactically and defensively while miraculously bringing in an attacking mindset. I don't think there is another manager out there who would've managed this Arsenal hospital squad to a semi-finals finish personally. Going to need to take a break from the online discourse if this Arteta-out agenda grows because I could not be further from it personally.

samthegooner I feel much the same. Everyone is justified to have their opinion. We aren't part of the Borg. but i find it hard to be super critical given our circumstances and comparisons to our main competitors.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert January was the first time there was a bit of a schism between him and those above him. Probably down to Edu not being there. Hopefully Berta is ready to make his mark this summer. We definitely need a different approach in the market to the last 2-3 windows.

What was our league run in last season? Was pretty good from what I remember. Our issues last season were much earlier. This is another false narrative that gets bandied around on social media.

Sicario2 being OK with it actually doesn't have anything to do with it. The only relevant question is whether you think the chances of success increase or decrease by changing the manager.

It's possible to not be OK with another trophyless season and still think that if we fire Arteta, things won't be better.

Sicario2 Of course I want to win titles. But I've lived through the Wenger banter years and the god awful Emery years where the squad was absolutely impotent compared to our rivals. Now we haven't lost to any of them in the last couple of league seasons and are constantly in the running for top honors. The grass is not always greener and I have yet to see another manager that consistently impresses me as much as Arteta does. We need to do more in terms of recruitment - everyone knows it and Arteta has been outright begging for it. I have strong doubts that anyone else could have put together the second half of the season that he did without falling completely apart due to our injuries. Hell - we saw what Pep did with similar injuries this year and he's regarded as the best.

The players also LOVE Arteta - Saka said it as recently as last week. Get rid of him and you definitely run the risk of pushing away some of our best players. But most of all, I believe in Arteta. This is his first manager job and he's knocked it out of the park while also learning on the fly. Can he get better? Of course. But I don't think there are more than 2-3 clubs in the world who wouldn't take him if he became available tomorrow.

Sicario2 it's frankly meaningless. Losing in the EFL semis is not the same as losing in the CL semis.

One of the big problems with modern day football punditry is the lazy use of data to find trends to prove something; when you scratch beneath the service, they often mean very little.

What about semi final v Newcastle when he played our best team (x 2)? Did he not want to win that?

Arteta is tactically superb and a pretty good evaluator of talent, but he is also too risk averse and rigid. I think we are defensively extremely strong, but our attack is too predictable. If Arteta can get us playing better attacking football next season, and keep the defensive structure, he should stay. If not, he needs to go.

However, that's not the point. I'm not sure we would get a better or even good manager if we let Arteta go. You're creating a new scenario here.

Sicario2 I haven't excused him, I critiqued the use of junk data to make some kind of a point. Took Wenger almost a decade to get us to a CL SF...do you remember how dismal we were in the competition? And this is Arteta's first job. Other than Wenger, no other manager has ever got us this far.

I don't claim he's perfect but you dismiss what he's done like it's nothing.

And re: Newcastle SF, obviously he wanted to win it but I'm not going to draw too many conclusions from that tie (or any other small, low quality sample of data).

We are not far off, we just need to sign some real quality in attack and maintain the level in other areas... Arteta has pretty much everything else down from a defense / structure / mentality perspective but he needs to prove that he can bring in the players in attack that can take us there.. and continue to improve his squad management.

Wenger was the same but the opposite he could coach an outstanding attacking team but the defense was always suspect, the way he solved when we were actually good is that was he signed (and inherited) quality defenders.

Bring in that quality upfront and most of the conversations around our rigidness goes away and will stop him overthinking what to do in attack which results in stupid shit like those long throw ins.

Doc do you not fear Artera is in danger of being a ‘nearly man’? We nearly won the league, we nearly won the CL, we nearly challenged for the title, we nearly did this and nearly did that?

The more we go trophyless the harder it will be to win as the pressure goes up that’s why I’m ok with just an FA Cup next year as it’s a start and stops the rot. No one can say we are bottlers or next season FC. And it’s a big weight off our shoulders.

The guys that are happy with going 6 years without a trophy underestimate how bad that reflects on a big club. We need to win. We must win. No matter what next season.

I would love to win the league next year but right now I’ll sign 2nd and an FA Cup and trust me our 2026/2027 will be much better as a result.

What will he damaging is if we are out of the title race and things look problematic in the CL before the winter. Then you haven’t seen pressure, the fans will turn. We must get the summer right and we must start very strong with a point to prove.

I saw someone opine today that Arteta always refers to Rice as a pillar (may be spacing on the exact term) that we signed and one to push the team on and he has been that in midfield but we need that same type of signing in the attack. Hopefully we invest properly this summer and give him the tools he needs for next year. The trophies will come if that happens.

The idea of sacking Arteta is totally foolish, and going on about 'standards' and 'excuses' is childish, petulant behavior. Mikel is a great leader and a great coach. To win major trophies, you have to have your best players fit and firing, and you have to get some breaks in your favor. We have had neither this season. Look at Liverpool last season, victimized by injuries and some crazy ref decisions, and they fall off the pace in the title race. Now this season the likes of Salah and van Dijk play every PL game, and bounces go their way, and guess what, they win the Prem at a canter.

Yes, it has been frustrating watching this team this year. But even in a disappointing season filled with injuries and terrible calls against us, we've managed to knock off Real Madrid in the Champions League and progress to the semi-finals for the first time in ages. Yes Arteta and the club failed in the transfer market last summer, we get it, and they need to get it right this summer. If they blow it again, then you can start asking questions. But overall the club is doing so well, on so many levels, and Arteta is at the heart of all of it. We are lucky to have him at Arsenal.

His managing of his squad is poor. Kai playing 90 mins every game and then getting injured for 4 months is no surprise.

Then question some of Arteta’s signings. Fuck was Sterling about? Was signing Calafiori worth it? 5 years in and he hasn’t signed a proper striker.

Main reason Slot won the league in his first season was he kept their fitness up constantly rotating their attacking players which is a trait he brought from Netherlands.

What happened this season is all on Arteta. You can’t be unlucky for 5 years resulting in zero silverware.

He needs to change and learn from his mistakes if we are going to do anything next year.

Don’t put your head under the carpet and think he’s the messiah when it’s his wrong doing’s that have led us with nothing tangible to show for in the last 5 years. £750m he spent with very little return on investment in teams of actual success.

genuine question why not this summer then? You acknowledged yourself that this season was poor luck while seasons before we had good luck with injuries - what changes if we can't get over the line in 25/26?
