The way to separate pros from slugs like us is to see how guys like Aguero and Mbappe immediately knew it was a violation. Mbappe was at the halfway line complaining to the ref as soon as that kick was taken. Aguerro spotted it on a livestream.

Without the refereeing headlines, the game would have been forgotten in a second. Now you've had engagement on it for days.

QuincyAbeyie Make the player retake it if he scores, and count it as a miss if he misses.

I think a retake is fair. If the keeper breaks the rules during a penalty it isn't just awarded as goal, its retaken. Same should apply to the taker.

Qwiss goals can only be awarded if they’re actually scored. Ball needs to cross the line. That is one of the few truths in the game. Hence the retake if goalie jumps early.

This is different from striker mis-hitting a ball. He’s fucked up. Tough luck for him. Get boots with better studs.

Claudius all you are doing is telling me the current rule which we wall know. We are talking about changing the rule to make it fairer.

Qwiss I’m saying it’s fair. The point of the rule is so the goalie focuses on one point of contact. If you loosen it, what degrees of freedom do you allow the attacker?

Claudius if he slips like Alvarez did then he should be allowed to retake it. Its not like he was trying to cheat. There is no extra freedom, just not punishing people for what was more likely a pitch issue than anything else.

Coombs Have to say I prefer this too. I don't think they should make penalties any easier to execute, they're already 0.8–0.9 xG or a straight out goal if you've got a Toney on side.

Burnwinter it's sport. It's all about precision, execution, not fucking up...I don't care for all this talk of intent and "what is he supposed to do" logic. Way I see it is the whole thing is backward these days. Administratively, we are concerned with precision, and sportingly, we are all wishy wishy. Flip it.

Coombs The better penalties are, and the better compact zonal defending becomes, the more you see offence become about attempting to win free kicks, penalties and corners, which even though we're becoming the masters of it, is a bit dreary and starts to make the sport feel like rugby union.

Burnwinter change to the offside rule like Wenger wants (daylight rule) fixes a lot of this.

All the arguments for why Alvarez shouldn't be allowed to attempt another penalty could also be used to say that a GK who steps off his line shouldn't be allowed to attempt another save.

QuincyAbeyie awarding goals when the ball never crossed the line would be bizarre. Not in favour. Shouldn't be making things happen that never actually occurred.

Coombs I do see his point though, you're sorta awarding the keeper a save he didn't make when the pen taker slips might as well award a goal as punishment when the keeper moves too early. You retake pens during normal time when a defender encroaches too early as well.

Don't see any reason why slipping (in a shootout) shouldn't be retaken.

Claudius Union Berlin scored a goal last Sunday against Frankfurt in the 89th minute to make it 3-1 only for VAR to chalk it off and award Frankfurt a free kick at the edge of Berlin's box because of a handball in the build up. That would've been unthinkable not long ago as well.

Offside for the final pass invalidates "ball crosses the line", a throw in into the goal makes it a goal kick instead of goal as well etc if you wanted to go wild with it teams get awarded 3-0 wins even with the other team winning 5-0 in exceptional cases. I get you can't discard them all akh but when someone says the rules should change you can't really explain how a rule should stand by referring to the rulebook

QuincyAbeyie the GK doesn’t get a retry. The shooter gets a retry because the goalkeeper jumped too early and his save prevented a potential goal.
