this makes sense. KSE spending program has been expansive and aggressive under edu and arteta, sometimes head scratchingly so. at the same time the sales have been lacklustre and the write offs have been frequent. maybe KSE are asking edu to handle the other side of the market properly before they'll allow any more spending.

Coombs United have Zirkee and Hojlund in his position. Said before I don't mind losing players to teams where they'll play. Losing them to other clubs where they haven't a chance is a real problem.

Coombs arteta did influence alot of thr hales boys into signing longterm deals, and used them less and less over time as we became more competitive. that can have ramifications for the next wave of academy players who may be less inclined to be sold on the path into the first team. united are midtable/europa dreck at the moment, and are investing in youth. they could make a more compelling case for giving minutes to young players at the moment

It's exactly that. The players who left like Omari Hutchinson didn't get a route into Chelsea's first team, either. He was sold a year or two later. So he wasn't sold on a route to first team football, so what is left aside from money?

Gazza M it's a fair point but we special efforts to re-sign Eddie and Reiss to give ourselves cover due to being in the middle of a rebuild. I'd like to think we won't face a similar situation now when it comes to assessing which youth players to promote into the first team.

Sounds like we made an effort but he probably wants more money, we shouldn't be bending over for him so let him go if he isn't happy. Supposedly his agent is known to be difficult so is what it is.

On the flip side when you are competing for the top trophies you simply can't always provide the type of path these players are looking for and only the exceptional will break through. That is where we want to be rather being the club that younger players use for their minutes.

We should have a stronger loan set up though and be able to at least make good money if they are sold. Problem is a lot of these guys are moving before we can tie them down and we need to work out a better system for that.

JazzG agree with your second paragraph. it's possible arteta actually did intend on using Nelson, nketiah, esr etc when he renewed all their deals, but we improved quicker than arteta accounted for, and hence they found the minutes harder to come by as we accelerated into becoming a title chasing team

Gazza M or you know, we base it on what he did since day 1? He hordes players and never uses them. He gives contracts out and never plays them. He is a little strange in that regard.

HomeSteak this is possible too and I've been critical about it. aside from renewing the hale end boys, there was a string of buys that became surplus in a short space of time (kiwior, vieira, lokonga, ramsdale etc)

No manager has a 100% success rate when it comes to transfers and until you have the player with you don't know how they will fit in.

I don't think Vieira is finished yet, I reckon if he stays this summer he'll have a much better season. He looked like he was getting ready to push on last season before the red card and groin injury last season.

I think it’s part of his ultra risk-averse approach to all areas. He wants to make sure if there’re is a massive injury crisis for instance he’s covered. It’s then Edu and Josh job to push back. Would be healthy tension like any business but Arteta so far has much more power. Maybe a rebalance is going on

now he supposedly wants to keep ESR. shouldn't be his decision to make. it's like asking a kid which toys he hasn't played with in years should go in the pile for charity.

the director of football, the board. anyone but the guy who would hoard all the players if you let him. it's not good for the club from a financial responsibility perspective and it's not good for a player who is at an age where he needs to play significantly to just hang around here and be an in case of emergency break glass player.

I don't think we have a normal director of football set up at the club, unlike many clubs these days Arteta is the manager rather than the coach so he has a lot more say in what goes. Clearly we have players in the squad for whatever reason Arteta doesn't trust, I don't think any of those players are rightfully excluded but we need to build a stronger squad with players he trusts and will rotate.

As for Arteta wanting ESR to stay, that comes across as us feeding it to the press to make sure we get the money we want for the player. I wanted ESR to succeed here, I always have a soft spot for Academy players and Arteta probably does as well but reality is he has made 25 appearances in the PL in the last two seasons.

Yeah that's only a stick to beat ESR with if he was actually injured and unable to play. Not if he was uninjured and in the squad for 80% of the games and not coming off the bench more than one every month or so.
