There was that period under Wenger where we couldn't defend a cross and it almost felt like a guaranteed goal every time the opposition got a corner. We've been pretty good at defending them lately but now with Raya it's the same sort of feeling of dread any time a cross goes anywhere near him. As an opposition player there's no reason to cross it anywhere else.

invisibleman18 he was a clear upgrade claiming crosses for the first few games, especially as Ramsdale had been awful commanding his box for months. Now here we are...something isn't right in Arsenal's goalkeeping setup, it can't just be the players at this point. Signing Runnarson is the canary in this particular coal mine.

The bit I hate most about this is that all the armchair pundits talking about the negative impact of having two first choice goalies being proven correct. The number of "I told you so's" we're going to have to bear on this will be painful.

Qwiss That's my view too. Ramsdale had a shaky first half against Brentford (noting he was a more composed in the 2nd and half and got out of it with a clean sheet) when he hadn't played for 10 games or whatever it was and knew he was coming in for possibly his last game of the season and maybe even for the club. But it's also worth remembering he was voted into the PFA team of the season last season and nominated for the Yashin award. I don't think anyone has suggested he's peak Seaman or Lehmann, but it also feels unfair to portray him as some sort of dodgy Almunia.

Qwiss Absolutely. And physically more aggressive and courageous. He's far from perfect but I don't see him getting as badly steamrolled by Adebayo, as Raya just was.

Burnwinter He's far from perfect but I don't see him getting as badly steamrolled by Adebayo, as Raya just was.

Why? I recall us conceding from multiple Ramsdale flaps last season

I don't remember whether we've conceded from it or not, but it's definitely something Ramsdale is prone to do as well.

I'm still not that interested in the Raya vs Ramsdale debate. Both are very good keepers in my book and both are suffering from a confidence crisis. But I'm not worried and I'm certainly not entertaining debates about who's worse.

Thought Raya was working through it before Tuesday, at least he's not been mucking up on the ball anymore. If Aaron came back in I'm sure he'll start to look like his old self soon enough too.

Clrnc If he can't deal with the pressure of getting his place back then he needs to leave. He won't get a run of games to win his place back, he will have training sessions and limited game time to prove himself. That is simply the cut throat nature of elite football.

Ramsdale was flapping around and making all sort of mistakes last season, goals went in where a top keeper would have saved them. I'm not saying Raya is the solution but I am saying Ramsdale definitely isn't.

I have a new found respect for Arteta for dropping Ramsdale and instead of getting his head down and working he has been using his agent and father to stir shit up in the media. Any foreign player would not get this much attention. Get rid in January if we get a good fee, this guy isn't worth the hassle.

Burnwinter Just off the top of my head he flapped at the goal that Martinez against us last season when we played Man Utd.

JazzG Missed his punch against PSV for De Jong's goal and conceded directly from a corner kick last season as well, didn't he?

goon isn't it when their level is similar such a debate would be even remotely interesting? No point discussing White vs Cedric.

                • goon replied to this.

I think if the debate surrounds who's better for our game stylistically it would be, rather than playing mistakes top trumps. Unfortunately the show they're both putting on so far this season has pushed that firmly into the background.

goon once we sell one and bring in a very inferior number 2 the main keeper will go up a few levels again

Pepe LeFrits Yup, he gets way too much leeway for his performances. I've been moaning about him for over a year it feels like. His passing has progressively got worse as well.

I'm sad because first 6 months Ramsdale looked a monster keeper in the making, honestly thought he would be among the top keepers in the world. Feels like that was just a purple patch now.

                    RocktheCasbah

Hates a bit strong, no? Havertz got far worse treatment and a few games later, his goals have contributed to 6 points won. It would be crazy to write Raya off.

                    Qwiss

The first thing Henry said when the story took hold was 'What about strikers?' Uncertainty about who is number 1 would be something that Havertz/Vieira/Jorginho would have also experienced this season. I don't recall a media storm about that.

How about White 'losing' his spot to Tomiyasu? I can't imagine White was particularly pleased about that and would have certainly brought doubts regarding his position as the main man.

The difference is not just the conditions that are created but also ones response to those conditions. Ramsdale could have responded far better than he has. If he buckles under pressure and competition, then that only weeds him out as someone who isn't good enough. It's not like Ramsdale didn't have problems last season.

If anything Raya may have accelerated the process to determining whether Ramsdale is actually good enough for a title winning side. And Raya himself might have shown that he's only good enough as number 2. Which means we go out and sign our Allison in the summer.

I think Raya is better than Ramsdale. Better shotstopper, much better with the ball at his feet. Yes, he has made a few costly mistakes, including the two goals conceded the other day, but all in all he is a clear upgrade on Ramsdale.

daredevil whether or not Ramsdale should've reacted better isn't really relevant the way I see it. The only thing that matters is whether Raya gives us a better season than Ramsdale did last year.

In simple terms, if Ramsdale gave us a 7/10 season last year and then Raya gives us 6/10 and Ramsdale drops to 5/10 due to his own disability to deal with being benched, the only relevant thing will be that we could've had a 7/10 Ramsdale instead.

(the numbers are just to be taken in relation to each other, not as absolute numbers. I've never been a big fan of Ramsdale and was clear about Raya becoming our first choice if we signed him. It's just the blame aspect I'm not following.)

daredevil I'm sure I've explained this before, but two of my best mates are Brentford ST holders. As such I have had ample opportunity to watch this guy and I just know in my bones that he is dodgy as fuck. I hated the links with him 3 years ago & breathed a sigh of relief when we sighed Ramsdale.

Yes, I was absolutely fooled by his first two games with us and I do get the logic behind the signing, but every time he has been under pressure since those first games, he has cracked. I have no problem with Aaron Ramsdale being replaced, but the upside of him being replaced by Raya seems marginal at best.
