In the last 2 weeks we’ve played 4 more games than Spurs, they’ve had over 2 weeks off since their last game. I feared we’d get physically overrun but full credit to our boys, they worked their bollocks off. We’ve got a game a week now until the end of the season, no excuses for feeling tired now.

Liverpool have been here before and City are relentless, they’re very unlikely to drop any points so all we can do is keep winning. Keep going until the end and hope for the best. Even if we don’t win we’ve got great foundations to push on.

Burnwinter My expectation is we show the same level of committed football we saw in the league last season, but without such a marked post-Christmas slump—but also without a slow start as in 21–22—based on a wiser disposition of intensity and greater rotation through the season. And that we get out of our group with some merit in Europe.

My outermost hope is that we win the league, it seems unlikely but we should be improving and maturing, and I think it may be possible now that City has achieved Guardiola's great objective there and won the Champions League. That our recruitment is making the club's ambition clear will be important psychologically, but it takes near perfection.

Just scrolled up to check what I'd actually written in this thread start of the season. It's not far off. If we'd gotten out of the blocks two points faster, we'd be closing in on my "outermost hope" ... we still might get there. Can't bring myself to complain.

Claudius I feel the same. We’ve had a very unfit Odegaard and White in the first half of the season, along with Jesus returning from a serious injury. And then the usual Partey/Tomi shenanigans. Plus we are still integrating Rice, Havertz and Raya - the first 10 games especially weren’t smooth for these guys. I think we will boss 2024.

My first real declaration in this thread was in late December when there were still concerns about the team. I think was spot on about how we’d do in 2024. All the fundamentals were there. We just had fitness and finishing problems. Proud and excited. These next two weeks will kill me.

You were quite right, and somewhat out on a limb at that stage amid the endless arguments about xG and finishing, that we'd find goalscoring form.

There were a few people saying creative form would surely pick up, but a lot of us were also declaring it was Toney in January or bust.

There's a big chance those who during that same time said it won't be enough to boss 2024 because it's too late will also be spot on.

Hopefully not, but the fact that we've had a near perfect 2024 and still probably won't win the title tells me that people were right to be very negative about the consequences of our late 2023.

QuincyAbeyie With hindsight, Havertz at 9 has been the single biggest factor in the improvement, followed by the prior tweak to Ødegaard's positioning and role. And arguably both could have come earlier, particularly Havertz.

Claudius Why? We played very badly and didn't deserve to win. Of all the points dropped, that was the most deserved defeat of the entire season. At Chelsea, Villa and Newcastle we didn't do enough to win any of those 3 as well.

My most regret is Villa home. Trossard scores and we win that. Our team selection was wrong too. But the easiest points dropped was probably against 10man Fulham at home with few minutes to go. I remember Sicario was raging and he already declared after that 3rd fixture of the season that it badly damaged our title chances and it's still true.

Clrnc Agreed on that first Fulham game. We had them dead to rights after the Bassey red card and completely let them off the hook. One thing that I am encouraged about this season is there aren't too many games you can look back on and say we were lucky to get those points. I felt like we had a few of those last year (Bournemouth at home, Aston Villa away come to mind) which made me cautious going into this season. My biggest concern as this season ends and we start looking to 24/25 is just continuing to keep our best players healthy.

Clrnc Fulham is the only time we didn’t pitch up. I can accept playing two games against Vila or even the West Ham match, completely dominating and going home empty handed. That’s football. You get punished for largesse, but you give yourself a chance when you outplay the opposition. That Fulham game, we looked more like Man United than Arsenal. Limp and lacklustre

We've had quite a few this season as well tbh. Less so since January however. This was a tweet from late 2023. Since then I can only think of the late Havertz header vs Brentford that gave us the points late on.

Big Willie simple. Post January we extended the xG gap in games. Less need for late heroics.

I think there is a distinction between there being a late winner and whether you did or did not distinctly outplay your opponent. I reckon we should have drawn against City at home and lost away to Chelsea and Tottenham. That's about it.

You see now end of the season, 96th minute how Declan is charging forward to score an unnecessary third goal against Bournemouth. Lots of desire. We looked a different team that day.
