Reading up it's based on averages and I think exclusively on PL transfers too so doesn't account for Madrid and their galacticos. So I assume the average fee between Shevchenko being sold and Rio being sold didn't change all that much.

It would explain why Chelsea (and United) dominate, because their fees were probably well over the average in that era, whereas by the time City came along the average fee went up considerably.

i would question their football inflation formula though because it doesn't add up. veron, shevchenko and ferdinand don't make sense when compared to each other.

Ferdinand for £29m in 2002 when the record transfer fee was 2001 £46m for Zidane. There is no perfectly accurate way of doing it but my point is Chelsea's spending at the time was mad. I think it's intuitive the Premier League has expanded faster than the regular economy? It would seem vaguely reasonable to "adjust" the fees based on overall revenue in the league for example ... the misleading bit is that they call it inflation.
