There have always been rumours the refs don't want VAR and are purposefully undermining the system. Yesterday again a blatant penalty turned down for Newcastle, I mean in real time it is hard to spot but from the replays it is clear that Gordon was fouled. If they can't pick this up from a replay then you do wonder about their competency.

That being said, can't dispute that Spurs are much more serious force now than they were during his time (just still not serious enough) - regardless of club loyalties, Levy is probably significantly responsible for that.

                        The challenge now though is that they face a very tough period of paying off a stadium without CL football for who knows how long. That could undo all the progress they've made (fingers crossed).

                              I'd rather referees came to the right decision, however long it takes, then for them to make the wrong one. Whilst VAR has had its issues, the overall number of correct decisions has gone up so giving that up for more mistakes is ludicrous. However, whilst I can understand referees making mistakes due to the speed of the game, making them when you have the benefit of replays is just unacceptable, hence why for me refereeing feels far worse than its ever been. Regardless, the issue is not with VAR but the officials using the tool. If they did end up scrapping it, I don't think I could continue watching this shit.

                              goon i would rather the PL got this case right. By all accounts we will have another full season before we get a verdict. This team has made a mockery of fair play.                                   Claudius Do you genuinely think there's a chance of any significant punishment? It's quite political when it's an oil nation state. Can they just threaten to restrict UK's access to their oil in response to any sanctions? Wouldn't be surprised if those conversations are happening behind closed doors.

                                        For the league this judgement is still quietly framed by the Johnson government's threat of an "independent regulator" after the last attempt at a breakaway ESL. It's impurely an impure football issue.

                                        As for the geopolitics, I think they'd be more likely to play a part of sorts if that hypothetical "independent regulator" were involved. The UK government has no track record of stepping up to Gulf monarchies.
