Mirth I don't know tbh, but looking at the names Arsenal are being linked with for the summer, and the need to improve our midfield, a pathway to the first team looks difficult for him.

Clrnc we bought Pépé for the immediate term but Saka not only became undroppable, he seized the RW spot. I think it will always be difficult at Arsenal, but possible. I am also surprised we're mulling 23/24 minutes at Arsenal for Patino. It would be about providing a quality season long loan. Something I prefer way more than resting on a buy back clause, which I have yet to see us exercise for a sold player turned star. Even if he stayed, I'd rather have him starting midfield for all cup competitions Sept-Dec than Xhaka.

Mirth Would be harsh I think to associate his spell with the club's demotion. He's had a good season and he's been productive. Can't blame him for wanting a sustained run out with a better base quality team now that he's gotten a taste.

It could be a similar story for Smith Rowe though I don't see him leaving this summer. And certainly a similar story again for Vieira.

The problem the youngsters face is that there's evidently a plan to bring in at least one starting midfielder but as yet, no publicly indicated intent to move Xhaka and Partey on if their successors are signed. Going to be slim pickings for some players unless bodies are moved on.

I think most of our hale end academy grads will find it difficult to break through as we are now very cash rich and chasing immediate success. How do you expect Patino to stay when we are signing 2 new CMs?

Nothing wrong with letting them leave and having a buy back clause.

Doesn't seem to stop Chelsea who were far worse though. Had about 70 players and some of them had been on loan for half a decade while they signed a new player for their position each year.

Maybe we're not as good at lying to these kids.

Right, it's pretty normal. We're heading into a season where we'll want to compete at an elite level on every front and a player like Patino will only ever play a few minutes of Carabao Cup at that rate.

Burnwinter Don't think we will play a single minute tbh. For one Arteta don't normally rotate, secondly he rotates to half fringe side but hardly ever give a young player his first start here.

And then if our midfield is Partey Caicedo Rice Xhaka Vieira Odegaard Jorginho Where's the little minute even going to come from? The fringe team will be Jorginho Xhaka Vieira

Why do people actually think we're going to pick up both Caicedo and Rice? I mean perhaps we just talk like that for argument's sake.

I'd be pleased and slightly surprised if we got either at this stage.

Agree - we need 2 CMs. Maybe we won't make 2 big name signings in the same position but our midfield has been weak for years and it's certainly not equipped for competing in the CL and Premier league at this point in time.

Oh, we could definitely use both Rice and Caicedo it's just the £180m price tag for the combination—from selling clubs who aren't going to fuck around—that makes me think it won't happen.

As you said the other day @Clrnc it would've been smart to go for Danilo in the winter after all. Wonder why we cooled on him.

Burnwinter talk was that the January move for Caicedo was to provide immediate depth this season and that Rice would be the summer target

IIRC the Danilo talks seemed to be fairly advanced but we were being asked to be £40m-£50m whereas Nottingham Forest got him for 50%.

Mirth Yeah those were always going to be nonsense talk. The Brazilian league record transfers are pretty low like I mentioned few windows ago he was always going to move for 20m or so. Palmeiras cannot afford to reject a good fee, I remember people speculating we couldn't get him because they were in the finals but turns out we just weren't interested for some reason.

Wasn't bought by Arteta. He can't wait to sell him tbf so not a valid comparison. And Saka was pretty established as a huge talent by Emery back then already.

Clrnc sure but we had Willian as our starting right mid ahead of Pepe for half a season. Nothing much to do with Saka at that point as he was still on the left.
