lorddulaarsenal I think that's an excellent Premier League midfield, but I could see it struggling a bit in Europe. Neither Rice nor Bruno seem particularly adept receiving the ball and passing in tight spaces. They're both suited to more of a physical, open-spaces game rather than a more technical one. But we need to prioritize the Premier League next season, so I'm definitely on board. After we win it next year we can set our eyes on the CL and replace Jorginho with a proper pivot better suited to Europe.

CPM I agree. you can go 100% workman and make up the cutting edge in your front 3 ala liverpool, but it's rare to see that work in europe. Newcastle fans main criticism of bruno is that he plays below his level when he's up against midfields of equal or greater footing. not just 'found out', but he actually plays quite poorly. it's happened in both the EPL and their short CL campaign. he'll improve us and im not against signing him, but I could see him being another guy we need to upgrade in 2-3 seasons in the vein of jesus and zinchenko

Laimer was owning the midfield battle when we faced Bayern. Some physicality will be very helpful in Europe.

Gazza M Newcastle midfield looked damn good in UCL when they had a technician like Tonali. It was once he got suspended and they fielded 3 workhorse of a midfield Willock-Longstaff-Bruno that they didn't do so well. Still they should have gone through had the ref not awarded a ridiculous penalty for PSG.

If he plays here he will have Odegaard and Rice flanking him. No issue tbh

Bruno is pretty technical anyway, in fact I don't see any real difference between him and someone like Paqueta. Has that Toni Kroos style first touch that uses the oppositions press against them, can run with the ball and definitely has a good pass on him.

The main area when you notice we're lacking with someone like Partey is with the press. He's too slow in thought and has lapses in concentration. I sense our priority is to fill our midfield with players who are on point in that regard.

To be fair nothing seems to work consistently in the CL. I'd argue City's highly technical and tactical sides struggled in the CL to an even bigger extent.

I think a water tight defence is the key. Ours had a big leak in the first half of the first leg against Bayern.

I think there's a fairly consistent theme of there being at least 1 or 2 highly technical, progressive midfielders in successful CL teams. henderson, fabinho, wijnaldum was an outlier

lorddulaarsenal I think this could be the year to give Nwaneri a proper bit of exposure, see where he's at.

Conditions are good to blood a youngster with no expectations now on the right, as despite our lack of cover for Saka and Øde, both play every single match, senior signings aren't going to want to compete with that.

Nwaneri looks quite physically advanced as well.

Burnwinter Vieira, if he can stay fit, will also provide excellent cover for both.

He looks ready to take things up a notch. Deceptively fast, creative with a good shot on him. Our version of Cole Palmer

I'd like to see CdK here - I think he will be a good fit for our team. He can play across the front four at a decent level across all positions - will be a good backup for any of them. Can be a utility player a la Trossard and if he can make the LWF position his own, even better. The one thing against him is his lack of speed - he's quite similar to our existing wingers other than Martinelli in that sense.

lorddulaarsenal We do need either Vieira or ESR to step up next season to spell Ødegaard. Arteta doesn't seem to have faith in either one.

I think he does have faith. It’s just he needs his players to be in their optimum physical condition.

Nico Williams - would give us another style of player on the left and he can cover Saka, or free Martinelli to

Central midfielder - Bruno, Zubimendi, Luiz or someone of that ilk

Xavi Simons - too much of a good opportunity to turn down should it present itself

If we get Simons I doubt we could stretch to a striker, but adding him and Nico Williams would bolster the attack significantly.

I think we can do without a new striker if we get Simons and Williams. Simons to drive the ball forward and open up space and Williams for his power.

Do you think? Havertz and Saka have both. Martinelli has pace and he's no powder puff either. Think Saka and Martinelli will only get stronger as they get older too. I would like a new winger and I think pace is important for that but I don't think we are lacking it all that much TBH.

Qwiss Saka doesn't run as directly. He always slows down and wait for his marker to catch up before tricking him.

Havertz is not that fast, like what United had against Citeh yesterday. And Havertz is easily shrugged off by any defender.

Martinelli is our only kind of direct weapon.

While I get where you guys are coming from, how we can be more like United is not the discussion I’d thought I’d be seeing in this thread 😆

Can never go wrong with pace, but if Martinelli, Saka and Kai were allowed to essentially not defend and just wait on the shoulder of the defence ready to pounce on Bruno spamming final balls, they’d we’d look a lot better on the counter. But we’d also probably be easier to break down.

Like I said yesterday, it’s more about adjusting the slider from an abundance of cautioun in those situations to taking a bit more risk and getting the balance right.

We 100% need a speed demon on the wings, we have fast players but we don't have any lightening quick players up top. Someone who if he gets behind the line isn't going to get caught.

I've seen the links to Rashford and an impact player like that would be ideal but he comes with probably too much baggage. We have too many players in the squad who are great a link play but not enough who out of nothing will create a goal. We need more unpredictability going forward.

I think someone like Neto would be perfect, seen him be devastating on the left and right wing, will give us a top class option on both sides. Also will do the dirty work and track back, concerns about injuries but might present an opportunity to get him cheaper and we'd need to manage his work load. Thing about his injuries are they seem to be different, he's somehow managed to pull hamstrings on both legs this season.

JazzG pre-injury neto is bang on the type of player we need. I wouldn't risk signing him now, we need to find a healthier version of him in the market
