Looks like he is one of those that needs a couple of games to get up to speed, lack of physicality and speed are a bit exposed when he isnt.. Develops our game really well though when he is on it.
He is a great playmaker, but the key issue is his defensive positioning when we have the ball and go forward (offensive marking). He protects the most vulnerable channels through the middle and reads the game superbly.
Don't think he will ever be a great defender but if he can stay fit I'm sure we would see a significant improvement on that front, he's a smart guy. But that my biggest issue with him, his injury record is pretty worrying even at city.
I unfortunately agree with KTs time here being numbered now unless he accepts a marginal role. I still love a traditional full back but in our system the inverted style is just better. Maybe he can adapt somehow
@[deleted] - completely agree, have been thinking about this for a while.
Have come to appreciate watching the system for a while now, how convenient it is for us defensively. We play a high press game and the major danger we face is when there is a turn over.
The central position is initially much more protected but also the fullback can fallback into position much easier from the central area rather than the wide fwd area. Sure it can work the other way round and you have the CMs cover the fullbacks like we used to but it the heat and chaos of the game, the simpler solution will always be much better
