• The Arsenal
  • "The journey continues" - Mikel signs extension until 2025

If they wait, they imply top four is their minimum standard, which it was implied wasn't the case earlier in the season. That implication then continues whether we get there (in which case it's assumed it has been the case) or not (in which case extending Arteta would look weak).

This way they get to look decisive and do what they've been planning to do anyway, extend his contract. It makes sense.

The hope is now that the bar's set higher with just such consistency next season.

I think this just added more pressure to our top four hopes.

How?

That might be true meaning top 6 is the standard they set and that's just disappointing.

But on the other hand means those American idiots really don't know much about football and is buying into Arteta explanation and the need for alot more big bame signings which can only be good for us

Well several people here view it exactly like that. He still had a year on his contract, no good reason to do it now other than to avoid that scenario which might "make sense" from their perspective but only because their minds were set on the outcome.

They offered him the contract after the Southampton game.

Very pleased with this. Excited to see where we go when the next stage of investment and development kicks in to gear this summer.

The club probably thinks this is good PR timing after Klopp, Pep, Ten Haag all agreed new contracts recently.

That's like one of those pick the odd man out questions from first grade - Klopp, Pep, Ten Haag and Arteta

That's basically how I feel about it. The planned mode of this extension, merits aside, give me some hope they'll also know when to sack him. Much prefer this to the years of rhetoric not matching reality we had with Wenger.

im done. all this club does is hurt me

How many times are you going to be done though? I might be inflating the figures but it feels like that's about the sixth time this season.

Yeah, I'm done with Granit Xhaka but I'm not done with Arsenal.

Sure. Except we already knew their minds were set on this outcome and frankly—bearing in mind we're coming back from moments this season where some prophets on this board were declaring relegation was on the cards—the standard we've reached has exceeded most people's expectations. It would be nice to beat Spurs and tie up fourth but I'd be fairly satisfied with a 70 point season, the mark we were talking about as being the requirement a few weeks ago, even if Champions League didn't happen.

None of that is relevant to the question when the "right" point to extend is. I don't share the premise either - if we're talking about expectations I'm sure I didn't hope for 8th, 8th and possibly 4th after 2.5 years, 20 players and 200m+ burnt. Not that my or your expectations matter anyway.

About "prophets" why the need for the constant little jabs, they're not funny and they don't add anything to a discussion that's already pretty callous

Doing this now instead of waiting until the seasons over tells you everything you need to know about the ambition Josh and Stan have for the club.

Exactly.
We met our objective for the year by locking in Europa league so give him a new contract.
Top 4 is the stretch goal and they probably don't care if we don't make it this year.

What a bunch of mugs.

As others say, seems odd timing so hoping we're not embarrassed by our own hubris.

I think they wanted European football this year, no matter what type that is. Now we have european football confirmed....so they gave him a new contract.

pretty much this, I think their target for him was 5th.

Doesn't even feel like a football club anymore, more like a startup Arteta founded with American investors

Why would he come out and say this? It's just dumb.

Lol offering him a contract after 3 straight losses, which "doesn't happen in football", tells him that "theee guys are serious"? How does that make any sense at all?
