I don't love this result. On one hand, it lowers the morale of the Bayern team, but on the other hand, the CL is the only thing they have left to play for now, so they will put all their focus on it.

USArsenal I kinda feel I'd rather be welcoming a struggling Bayern side to the Emirates. Yes, the fact the Bundesliga is gone means they can put all their eggs in one basket, but I think there is such a psychological aspect to the knock out phases of the Champions League, I'd rather we played a team where there is nothing to fear. And their results this season show exactly that.

Since 2010, the number of teams that won the CL and failed to win their domestic title was equal to the number of teams who won the Double or better. Meaning that relatively weak domestic form doesn't necessarily translate into similar European form. It's quite amazing to think that the respective domestic forms of two European clubs against two different sets of opposition, tells you anything meaningful about each others prospects in a completely different competition and format. European competition wouldn't have been pioneered if you could make a reasonable judgment like Arsenal beat Liverpool and Dortmund beat Bayern, so Arsenal should beat Bayern.

daredevil I'm not saying we will beat Bayern, I'm just saying that I feel a lot happier about our chances of competing with them than the last time we shared a pitch with them. I don't know if you can say we "played" them at any point in that 10-2 humiliation..

What if you use top 2 instead of winning the title? Teams that win the CL almost always do well domestically as well. Because they're good teams. Because being a good team helps both domestically and in Europe.

That half the teams that won the CL also won their domestic leagues shows a strong correlation between league form and CL form, not the opposite.

I didn't say there isn't a correlation, I'm arguing against there being a perfect linear association, which the current sentiment that Bayern being second in the Bundesliga and us being first in the PL means we should beat them, implies.

Nah, my point was not that i would prefer them flying, but having them still feeling like they have something to play for in their league (even though the chances were slim) might see them play more of their key players in the league and tire them out more. That was my only reasoning.

Champions league = strong teams playing a knockout contest. Typically the very best teams should win, but the knockout format introduces some fortune into the formula. Only reason City don’t have 2 or 3 of these things

There is no precedent that sets you up for 180 mins of knockout football. It's kind of like Test cricket vs 50 overs, they're practically and literally different games. City are good proof of that.

At this stage every team is a strong team. Bayern are absolutely a strong team and so are we. That's a given. I'm just promoting caution instead of hubris. I've seen this play out too many times.

daredevil a perfect linear association would mean that we would beat Bayern 10/10 times, so nobody would argue against that (and if they were, they would put everything they owned on that bet). But our current team would have better chances against this Bayern than against a stronger version of them, and this team would have a better chance against Bayern than what Arsenal 19/20 would have.

Becoming a better team gives you better chances both domestically and in European football. There's nothing amazing about it.

If you compare the last 10 years, this is probably the best ever time to play Bayern. Their team isn't as strong, their defence is not fixed (Dier ffs), Neuer is getting on and their midfield is the weakest it has been.

I am not saying we will beat them, but we have as good a chance as anyone to beat them. Playing it down just because you fear we will bottle it does not equate to them being strong this season. If we play to our normal level, we will beat them. Lazio who is a really poor team caused them so many problems in the previous leg.

USArsenal I understand your point and I do agree to it to a certain extent. Wasn't referring to you, but those people on socials who kept saying poor domestic form is an advantage to Bayern and they rather play a stronger Bayern team

I don't disagree with any of that, but at this stage of the competition every remaining team is domestically strong. Only Dortmund is outside of the CL spots. So the respective domestic forms of each doesn't tell you a whole lot about their CL prospects. We have a better chance now than we've ever had to beat Bayern, but I'd still have them as favourites.

They are so awful defensively you have to take it to Bayern a bit more I think not like the city game I think it requires us to risk a little more but they are not a good defensive side so it's worth it I reckon.
