We will need to start Luiz for a few weeks but by Xmas we should’ve transitioned God-willing

It’s not just the physicality and pace. Bellerin would be the most experienced defender in that back line. I’m not convinced that’s a top 4 back line. At least not without a Partey helping out.

Yeah I think it's crazy to be thinking such young players will come in and be at the necessary level. Both still learning their roles and will need an experienced defender next to them for a decent while yet.

Mustafi will very much be in the reckoning still. Let's not kid ourselves.

I can't imagine a Gabriel-Saliba partnership will be ready for Premier League either.

Then again what we have at the moment is subpar too. We finished 8th this season so it's not like there's much to lose by booting Luiz and Mustafi out of the XI.

That’s my feeling too. If we limit their exposure it will be to protect them rather than the team.

Gabriel is a good age anyway, soon to turn 23, so we are talking about a player building up to his prime years. Saliba is very young so might need a little more protecting.

Gabriel was in the L’Equipe team of the season. He’s ready. The wildcard is Saliba but who would we rather start ahead of him on the right side if we do a 4 man D?
Gabriel cannot play on the right because he can’t tackle with his right. So maybe we do Luiz there. Or we start Mustafi + one of Gabriel or Luiz.
Or all 3 of them in a 343. Or stick with Tierney. I suspect Saliba will have to learn to swim. His team had a massive positive performance differential with him versus without him.

I assume we will start 343 but by Xmas I imagine we will be a 433. Arteta has suggested he is compromising. And when he attacks, a lot of his patterns default to 433 or 5-5 patterns. The break is so short poor Arteta is going to have to transition the team in-season
