Basically crediting him with every little thing possible (Sterling's improvement in City, innovating their set piece, inventing the inverted LB etc)

            I think even Arteta's biggest fans would concede trophies have to be put in the cabinet before the could be compared favourably with Jürgen Klopp, never mind Pep. To say otherwise would be mad.

            I'd love Clarence to point us to this post he's talking about.

              Tam it's entirely possible to talk up Edu, talk down Begiristain, and also accept Begiristain is still the more competent in the role.

              Entirely possible, but someone who thinks Edu was a good person for the job and doesn't see why Berigistain would be a good alternative probably doesn't think so.

                The discussion in this thread proves that none of us can really assess how Edu has done really. It's mostly a black box and there are so many variables to take into account. I just hope we don't hire another crook like Sannlehi.

                      Claudius I don't understand the point, here. We lost our sporting director, we should get another sporting director, and some of us hope we get in someone better. Are you saying that there is nobody better, or that the position itself is meaningless?

                          goon sounds good on paper but really hard to do. You still need people with domain knowledge and relationships, which is why Edu was so valuable.

                          There are definitely interesting options out there. What I am thankful for is that we are looking for a new DoF when we have just finished 2nd two years in a row and have one of the 3-4 most valuable squads in the world filled with promising young world class players on long term contracts. Contrast with when Edu started and we were outside top 4, with a declining squad value dragged down by old men and has beens. And consider the challenges of having to take over during COVID, when there was a financial crisis and we had to shutter our scouting system.

                          Edu has built a great platform for the next guy. Will be interesting to see what new angles we can play to keep improving and evolving. It’s an exciting opportunity that we shouldn’t waste.

                            We have a shed load of lawyers and business drones at the club already. We need, for want of a better term, a football man. Edu was that. He was respected in football and had connections. We need another sporting/technical director who had football connections. Getting some CFO in from apple is like getting someone from the genius bar to play left back.

                              Qwiss we just brought another lawyer in to take Garlick's former position. If we're run by a pack of solicitors + Arteta, that'll be a very dubious structure.

                                goon we've been interested in board makeup, directors, and executives for decades. It's not a new thing, it's how it's been for ages. Maybe we weren't as kids, but the idea that our changing experience reflects some kind of contemporary malaise is a fallacy.

                                  I think the most urgent need is to recruit a Chief Sense of Humour Officer for OMITT.

                                  I must admit I’ve lost interest in much of the structure around the club since the Wenger days. Logically to me Raul x Sven x Emery should have been far more effective than Arteta x Edu, but one turned out to be an unmitigated disaster and the other a success story, so what do I know.

                                  The football itself is just about enough for me to stress about these days, at least I can critique what I can see.

                                    Edu came in as a rookie though and made many mistakes. We need an Edu but with 5 years experience.

                                      The most interesting aspect of the club's reported "leadership trajectory" at present, which I've seen mentioned in more than one outlet and context, is the increasing involvement and decisiveness of Tim Lewis.

                                      Lewis was already the trusted Kroenke henchman whose arrival on the Board signalled a cleaning of house and the end of Sanllehi.

                                      If there were any "push factors" involved in Edu's exit, my bet would be on Lewis's presence and reported increased involvement in decisions, and his positions and style having a lot to do with Arteta's apparent clout with KSE.
