ive been a martinelli detractor for a while. but he should only go if we are replacing him with genuine quality. i love trossard, but he is reaching the end of his peak and is going to just be a squaddie who can impact games off the bench soon.
in a winger, a true winger, you need to have one of two things: elite trickery/skill bag, or an insanely proficient delivery/crossing ability. i think martinelli possesses neither. a few years ago, i assumed the plan was that eventually he'd slot in as a central striker, but i suspect that hasnt been tried because his end product is very inconsistent. he is capable of hitting sweet curling shots, and hes also capable of lashing 4 straight shots into row Z. now when he gets the ball out wide, he runs straight ahead, and often times, his final decision is the wrong one. he hasnt shown consistent improvement over the last 2-3 years imo.
i dont know who youd replace him with, but that isnt my job. surely there are 20 better wingers out there who could be attainable, and surely there is a big club who would pay a decent fee for martinelli.
