Strange transfer in an increasingly strange career. Shelvey seems doomed to play for cut-rate clubs, could easily be a squaddie at a top four club.

Newcastle aren't all that far away from being a decent side. Shelvey and Saivet are good signings

They really need to upgrade Coloccini though

Shelvey is a horrible player. Don't understand what you guys see in him. You must have only seen him play in highlight reels. Couple of brilliant moments aside once a while he's a lazy, error-prone midfielder with a poor touch and poor short passing. He's probably a slight upgrade over Jack Colback though.

In other news, Sport says that Barca are close to signing Nolito starting with a 6 month loan.

Mike Williamson is by far the worst player.

I'm talking about starters, Williamson barely plays for them I think.

No one said he was Pirlo.

Seriously reckon Shelvey's worse than all the squad midfielders stinking up the upper sectors of the league table at the moment? Nah.

Shelvey is a good player.

Shelvey is a very decent player, but the problem with him is that he is not a defined midfielder in any role. He needs to find his true best position.

He has had a couple of truly outstanding games this season anyway, against United and Chelsea. His england app was good as well. Looking at his style though, it's hard to imagine he came through the Arsenal youth system.

He used to play a lot but they can't excuse it anymore. They sent him on loan. But now he's getting recalled. Let the comedy resume.

I love when they partner him with Coloccini.

He's a decent enough player—remember Flamini's the benchmark here. You're accusing people of judging him by highlights reels, can't see how that's worse than judging him by one cup performance and vox pops from a few embittered fans.

I don't watch highlight reels but I've seen Swansea enough times play to know that he's a good player, very inconsistent but he's shown his potential many times over the last two or so seasons. Would never want him of course but for a midtable team he can be a very good performer, Liverpool for example could do with him very well.

I have watched quite a lot of Swansea ever since Michael Laudrup was appointed so I'm only basing my opinion on my own observations. I'm just backing up my claims with views from other people who have watched him more than you guys presumably have.

I'll say one thing, if his problems are motivational then a move to Newcastle won't fix them. That absurd club could awaken a streak of nihilism in any player.

You're not even really disagreeing with the overall notion in this thread. Most here are saying he's a talented young player with a big consistency problem, you're saying he's a shithouse capable of brilliant moments. Same idea, shifted emphasis really

True 😆

It must be horrible being a Newcastle fan.

I can see what you mean but I am disagreeing with those that say he's a good player and that he could be a squad player for a top 4 club. "Good" and "Shelvey" don't belong in the same sentence for me.

I too think Shelvey is a good player with inconsistency problems.

This might sound funny,  but Coloccini is one of the best in Europe at playing the ball out of defence IMO. His technique is stunning for a CB. His problem is his lack of pace and although his positioning is good, it's not good enough to compensate for his lack of pace (like say Merte).

He has been one of Newcastle's best players over the years IMO.
