Why ignore the possibility that they see massive potential in Martial and wanted to invest in that as opposed to getting stung again as they did with Falcao?
Using what United have done to feed into the notion that no strikers exist is dodgy given the lack of insight into their current policies and scouting methods.
The fact that we are sitting on our arse most certainly doesn't prove strikers don't exist, just as Wenger not signing a CB last summer was not proof that CB's didn't exist.
Though if I remember correctly he used that line, and then he signed Gabriel in January...
