Mokbel reported us being interested in Di Maria last month. We're hearing too much about Benzema leaving and not enough about a new star forward coming to Real Madrid. It's the latter that would suggest this has a real chance.

We probably were monitoring the situation, we probably do the same for many players. Wenger is a fan of Di Maria and had it not been for work permit issues we would have signed him years ago. Think he'd be a hell of a lot better for us than he was for Man Utd.

The last bit means something like "but I have started to have doubts". At least that's how my girlfriend translated it to me.
