Don't know why everyone is still hell bent on buying in cheap. We've been doing it for 8 years and it's done us no good on the pitch.

Maybe not Villa but why Remy?

Get in quality and be willing to spend.

I don't think anyone's that bothered about the price, being a bargain isn't a bad thing! Wenger's made it one - and even he's had his share of success with it.

Anyway, the point is, he looks a player. By saying I wouldn't mind him here is a tacit admission of his quality rather than me suggesting we need to go all out

You're missing the point Tony.
I'm not suggesting we only buy Remy or that we don't aim higher.
I was just considering whether or not it would be worth going for Remy as a good quality squad option given that he may be available at a reasonable price.
Normally even mediocre PL strikers are overpriced.

No point getting in a squad striker. We already have that in Giroud. Just get in a top striker.

I think we need 2 strikers this summer.

Only if one of them can also play out wide, or in the hole.

we have giroud, so getting remy would just be spinning our wheels. he's pacier than giroud but not as good in the air. politically, we're not going to sell giroud after just one season, as that would basically be an admission by wenger that he doesn't know what he's doing, since giroud just replaced the guy who helped united run away with the league this year.

moreover, we play with only 1 forward, and remy is not a wide mid. we're not going to rotate [top class CF], giroud and remy in 1 position.

for me, our summer plan is quite simple. get rid of deadwood, buy a top class striker, buy a top class CB who is a vocal organiser. if we can afford it, a defensive-minded CM who can pass and loves the sight of blood would be nice. there's no point looking at anyone who costs < 15m GBP.

that's a lot of players, Kami.
which position would you fill if you had to choose just one player, bearing in mind that we have...
1) the 2nd best goal-scoring
2) the 3rd best defense in the league

A top class forward is what we need because Giroud is clearly not top tier or even close

I'd go for that as well. That we Cazorla as our leading scorer on 13 games in April is massive cause for concern. I like that the boys are spreading the scoring responsibility this year, but we also need someone who can score often and score when it looks unlikely we'll net.

Wenger has always said that buying more than 3 first team players disrupts the balance of the squad (yet he'll happily flog captains) so I reckon 3 players is a reasonable expectation given our recent decline and dire need for more quality in the team. I'd like:

1st choice striker (Jovetic)

A wide forward (Absolutely no idea)

Midfield bruiser (Wanyama/Bender)

Leaving us with:

----------Jovetic?
New guy------------Walcott
-----------Cazorla
-------Jack------Wanyama/bender?
Gibbs---Kos----Mert---Jenks

Bench:
GK
Sagna
Verms
Areta
Ramsey
Podolski
Giroud

BACKUPS

----------Giroud
Podolski----------Chambo
-----------Rosicky
------Ramsey-----Arteta
Natxo---Verm----Miguel?---Sagna?

Gervinho offering cover for the entire front 3
I'd like to see Fringpong come back and get some minutes too

Diaby to be sold!

Jovetic, Isco, Bender...

We'd be laughing.

Generally agree with Kami. Only difference is I think a top class central midfielder is a much bigger issue than another CB.

I would love it if we bought Jovetic and Luiz Gustavo/Sven Bender/Lars Bender. Pricey but affordable targets, both regarding fees and wages.

Buy those two and be a bit more flexible between using 2 forwards, (Podolski, Jovetic), and the current system with either Jovetic or Giroud leading the line. We would probably be able to pull off a two man midfield with a combo of Arteta/Bender and Wilshere/Ramsey.

We wont sign a wide forward without selling Podolski and/or Gervinho.

I think Remy is underrated but he is also not someone you would trust as a lone striker. He obviously shown that he is more than good enough in this league, some of his hits and technique shown is fantastic.

I like his celebration, remind me alot of a certain Thierry Henry

Always liked Remy. Be very pleased if we got him. Priority over someone like Jovetic or Isco (we ain't getting two of that level) and a proper midfielder of course, but Remy wouldn't be an awful signing at that price.

Weren't people wanking over him in the transfer threads a few summers ago, how on Earth did he end up at QPR if he is that good?

Redknapp tried to sign him when he managed Spurs. And this year he was due to go to Newcastle, but QPR offered him 75k a week and a chance to walk on a cut price if they get relegated this year. Like how Demba Ba joined West Ham and fucked off as soon as they got relegated.

He looked like he was on the verge of a big breakthrough when he was 23. It didn't really happen though. I wonder what kind of player he would have been today if we had managed to sign him back in -09.
