I don't think you'll like Bent once he actually turns up, great finisher but not much of a footballer and lot will break down with him imo.

You might say it won't matter if he scores but people, correctly, expect more from Walcott and he's one of the most productive players in the league!

Whoever we sign to cover for van Persie will have to be accustomed to spending most of the season on the bench and the odd appearance in the cup, unless RvP is injured. I'd rather have a player that's match fit and raring to go up front should the occasion arise. As I said before, I think it's difficult finding a back up in the lone striker role and so I support the idea of Podolski filling in through the middle if he is capable of doing so, similar to Anelka and Drogba at Chelsea but a much better fit.

Aye, but if Podolski plays as a regular starter out wide he's more likely to be injured, fatigued or unavailable for other reasons when we might need him centrally. We need proper squad depth up front. Someone we know for sure will be there if Robin gets injured. Unfortunately that person is still Chamakh as things stand.

Tim was right in observing we could do with that "tall man" (should really be Chamakh if he wasn't such a basket case) option. However, whoever it is would have to be a sub for the most part, so probably an experienced, no bullshit player in the twilight of his career.

For that reason I don't think Giroud is realistic, he'll be wanting to be first choice all the time, and even someone like Darren Bent would probably balk at being behind Van Persie and Podolski unless the money was unusually good by our standards.

It's a real pity and an annoyance that Chamakh can't turn his head around.

Who's going to come in and sit on the bench that also has the requisite quality?

I think Podolski has been brought in just as much, if not more, with centre forward in mind as he has left wing. He knows he won't be guaranteed to come straight in and start.

Podolski will be guaranteed to come straight into the team. He plays off the wing for Germany in a similar system.

It's hard to get good squad depth obviously, but that's the reality of playing with a sole striker. That's why you need to change the backup players every season or two. Besides, Podolski is far from an ideal centreforward to begin with.

Gervinho is now squad depth - which is pretty much his level. Walcott too, if he reverts back to the form he showed for the central third of the season for any great period (likely). That doesn't mean those two, Oxlade & Ryo will never play - Poldi will rest every now and then too, and play the odd game up front as well, but we won't be so reliant on them...

That said, I now don't know where we'll be able to squeeze in the creative player we really need without selling someone. I'm reluctant, btut if it happens I wouldn't be shocked to see Theo leave.

Podolski is in the bag, my guess is that we're in the market for a defensive midfielder, given the constant links to Vertonghen, M'Vila, Biglia, Capoue etc.

Would leave us very reliant yet again on Wilshere stepping in to the creative void left by Cesc, and there's no telling what shape he'll be in next year. Defo need to get some sign some sort of creativity this summer.

That's what we need is more quality options. Walcott and Gervinho are good players when they're on form, with more options to pick from, Wenger can put them in and leave them out based on how they're playing at different points in the season. You know, as other managers at big clubs are able to do throughout a season. Novel idea isn't it. Might even win something.

Thats it exactly. Its why I hate seeing people saying sell Theo or Gervinho and sign whoever scored 30 for them on FM2012. We need to retain those players and add top quality, not replace them. Last season Nani was probably the best player in the league but Fergie still went out and signed Young and now he chooses from Nani, Young and Valencia based on form and tactics. Nasri this time last year was piss poor for us but right now he's in great form, when it matter. The reason for that is that he's been rested loads this season because City have options.

Meanwhile Theo and Arteta have burnt out so bad they got injuries. RVP was over played to a ridiculous level for a player with his injury history and we're lucky he's just looking exhausted and not injured.

We are desperately short on squad depth.

Hmm...you might have a point there, Liverpool under Rafa used to finish the season strongly when he used to rotate half the team early on in the season. More squad options should help avert our end of season slump.

There have been so many times this season and last when it was clear we had out of form players playing but no one to come in for them. People say things like "oh when Jack comes back we'll have..." which is sort of true but you just know when he does 2 or 3 other players will get hurt and we'll be in trouble somewhere else. Look at how badly we did when Sagna was out.

I think a good squad should consist of 2 good players in every position. In that group of 22, the spine of the team should consist of top class players (one in attack, one in midfield, one in defence, one at GK). And you need 3/4 other players in addition to the 22 to act as utility players (incase 2 players in the same position are injured).

Numbers wise, I think we are ok in many positions. The set of 4 CBs (Verm, Kos, Merts, Miquel) are solid. If we were to sign that Ajax chap we're linked with, no-one would complain obviously but we would feel that other areas need investing more.

I think we're at the stage now where we are ok on numbers. We need quality. So instead of getting a decent CB for £10m and a decent midfielder for £10m...get a top midfielder for £20m. Obviously more money doesn't equal quality but, usually, good players cost good money.

I think of alot of it in terms of pairings. So you have 2 centre halves and you need 3 good ones and 2 back ups for that pairing. I think we're ok there, we have the first 3 anyway. Then I seen Song-Arteta as a partnership that needs another player, someone like M'Vila, then you can have Coq, Diaby, Ramsey whatever as back up. Wingers is another pair sort of, so you need 3 quality players and some back up there, we should have Podolski, Theo, Ox, Gervinho, Miyachi there next season. Some argument on whether there is enough quality in that group but I'd say its not out weakest area.

After that you have individual positions in our squad RB, LB, AM and striker. I'd like 2 ready players for each of them and someone in a back role after that.

Guys like Ramsey, Ox, etc can do numerous back up roles too. That might be a reason to replace the likes of Djourou with someone a bit more flexible because he's shown a serious lack of quality at fullback. And Ramsey should only be a back up for centre mid positions, not the wings.
