Loads of room for a fairly versatile forward player klaus. Gervinho, Walcott, Chambo, Podolski, Ryo and RVP, 6 forwards for 3 positions. Podolski will double up as an RVP stand-in and Chambo will get some games in midfield, leaving a few minutes here and there for Ryo. Happy days.

And lads, it's not 150 opportunities over a season, cos pretty much none of those players are capable/trusted to play in all 3 of those psoitions. Walcott is almost exclusively a right winger, RVP a centre forward etc.

As for being on topic - I maintain that a Podolski like signing is the best we can hope for with Wenger as our manager. At least until some of our major commercial deals are re-negotiated.

So, why not Podolski himself? Good player, goal scorer, hitting his prime, will no doubt improve our attack. Take him!

The thing is that van Persie is still the only one of that lot who can play centreforward effectively in our setup. The others are only suited to the wide positions. I certainly wouldn't mind Podolski for the quoted sum, but would Wenger really throw £14 million on Gervinho only to sign someone else the next season and push him further down the pecking order, behind both Chamberlain, Walcott and - if he arrives - Podolski?

We'll see I guess, but it doesn't add up in my head unless a wide player leaves. I'd assume that player will be Walcott in that case, since he's the one most similar to Podolski and hasn't signed a new deal yet. This summer is the last chance to cash in on him if he doesn't want to extend.

In the same way that Theo Walcott could play there, perhaps. Capable of playing as a striker, ill-suited as a playmaking centreforward.

Podolski is a much better footballer than Walcott.

It has little to do with the point I was making. Chamberlain is a better footballer than both. He wouldn't be a great replacement for Robin either.

You know what? I just hope we sign him. Then you and I can quarrel about whether he can do a decent job or not at CF for us. 🙂

How do you know how much Gervinho was bought for?

Only going by the fee reported at the time, but it was the fee every single media outlet going quoted. Lille may even have confirmed it but I can't remember, and am too tired to look.

Ricky: Cheers, that makes sense. Think I've seen that sum quoted before too.

I think Wenger expected more from Gervinho this season. In all likelihood he was supposed to be the main wide man while Chamberlain was blooded in and after that he would've been competing with Walcott for a spot. It makes sense when you look at his stats for the last few seasons. There's been an increasing improvement in terms of both goals and assists for the last three years. The step up from Lille to Arsenal was bigger than anticipated though.

Well he wouldn't have to play centre forward in exactly the same way Robin does. Fact is Podolski has plenty of experience as a pure striker and we'd have to back him to get the job done. Either way, Podolski or Theo cant be any worse than RVP's back ups from this season.

I think Gervinho had a fine first half of the season. Didn't pull up trees but was generally on par with the other new wide signings like Mata and Young. It's his post-African Cup form that has been distressing. It's almost as though he caught Chamakhitis on his trip. He's been pants in 2012
