🙂 that, but even if I wanted to believe we're in uncharacteristically, there's too much stuff around it that was strange - not just "our" stuff. I'd love to be laughing at all this in retrospect after it's done, but for now.... dunno.

Sure, but Podolski is not coming to sit on the bench and be a backup for Robin. More likely he'll be used as a wide player and give us the option to alter the formation a bit and put him up front when van Persie is out. I don't see it unless we lose Walcott this summer.

Nor would he sit on the bench. We really wouldn't be playing Robin 90 minutes, of every game as often as we do, if we had a striker on the bench who wasn't a total joke. Podolski would play plenty, both up-front and on the flanks.

whats with the reticence towards signings all of a sudden? why are people debating the merits of where guys like vertonghen and podolski would fit in? lest we forget how deperate we all were for qulaity players a few short months ago.

Because what players we sign and how they fit in is of paramount importance when discussing transfers? No good taking any old decent player we can get.

Look no further than Mr Park for evidence of that - though at this stage it's even a stretch to say he's decent, given the fact he's been invisible for most of the season.

At the very least we should be losing Benayoun and one of Chamakh/Park for next season, there is plenty of room for Podolski. Scratch that, there is a NEED for him. We don't have enough goalscorers.

Are people back to this business of players sitting on the bench. Even with Walcott sticking around, Podolski wouldn't ride the pine. And even then, there are well over 150 games available in the front 3 positions each season. That's still a lot of starts for each of Podolski, Walcott, Gervinho, van Persie, Oxlade even without injury problems.

I wish people would stop using that made up statistical expression. It's bullshit. There aren't 150 games per season no matter how you count.

I doubt that Podolski is capable of playing as a lone striker in our formation. If he's used up front it will be only on occasions when Robin is missing and the formation will probably be altered as a result. He would likely start on the left side of the attack for us. I'd be up for it but I don't think Wenger is. He wouldn't have splashed so much money on Gervinho and Chamberlain last summer in that case. Seems weird to splash more cash on another wide player when Chamberlain is starting to come of age too.

Around 50 across all competitions. Any player could theoretically be used on more than one position but it doesn't change the fact that there are 50 games. No less, no more.
