The problem with those two as a partnership is that we can't defend deep because they're too short. So last season we pushed forward and left gaps mostly because Kos kept stepping up into midfield to try and win the ball. The amount of times he left Vermaelen all alone in a 1v1 or even 2v1 was astounding.

What we really need is a braver, more consistent version of Djourou. A center back that's both agile and big.

Mertesacker continues to baffle me. Honestly on paper how is he a good defender? Slow, can't turn, don't really jump well too. Big sized, almost certainly to get eaten up by nimpy players like Suarez and Aguero.

BUT, come the real pitch, he is bloody good. Defies all critics, solid as hell. Totally owned some of those smallish dribblers as well.

This is the best central defence option Wenger has ever assembled imo. Don't think many teams in europe will come close. Only maybe juve.

Asa, Verm and Kos were rock solid against Milan at home last season.

Mbiwa would be an amazing pick up on a free, heck, he'd be a great pick up regardless of the fee. Hopefully Milan do so badly between now and January that he chooses us, if we even make an offer that is. I'd imagine there will be a number of other top clubs after him though.

I think you can attribute a lot of that to his intelligence. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time

Mertesacker is an excellent tackler. That's part of the reason why he does better than people expect.

Well, that is according to twitter that he was voted MOTM. 😆 I take it back then. As for the score, wouldn't give him a 10 personally, I'd say an 8. Rarely give a player a 10/10 score.

Mertesacker - TV - Kos... loving the options. Each bring unique styles to the table.

I don't know if Verm and Kos are ultra top CB's, but even if that's the case, I always want to see Mert in the starting XI. We defend better with him.

Its games like these you can appreciate the strength in depth at CB, a couple of season's ago an injury to vermaelen would have left us with squillaci starting against aguero.

Personally love Mertesacker. He'll give you a couple of scares every game I feel but he's invaluable for the interceptions he makes and you can tell from the positions he takes up that he knows where to be and when. Proper defender.

Love our CB options. Hopefully TV is back for Coventry so we get a chance to see him together with Kos. (Suspect it will be Kos/Djourou though). In theory Kos/TV should be an awesome pairing, but I have my doubts. They haven't played too well together in the past.

Personally I'd have Mertesacker in my best XI, but it isn't like I would lose any sleep if he was third choice either. So happy we have all 3 of them, and a player as good as Djourou as 4th choice.

Thought he was super today.
So many worrying City attacking movements just stopped dead by those reliable legs.
He was a comforting presence throughout the game.

Would have thought it'd be Djourou and Miquel against Coventry, Rex. No way we'd risk Mertesacker or Vermaelen.
