We have made some fantastic center back buys in the last 4 seasons. Mertesacker and Koscielny were both excellent today.

Kos did most things well enough, and I really appreciated what he tried to do in possession (much better as LCB). But like I said in the other thread, he wasn't sharp enough with his tackling and nearly cost us. Aguero really should have gone down, good thing he's not a cunt. If that was Balotelli we'd would have been fucked.

Koscienly had an edgy first half but got better as the game went on.

Thought Mertersacker was immense today, really big performance from the big guy. Just goes to show you got to give foreign players a year to settle in. A lot of us had written him off but been brilliant so far this season.

Ironic as it is I think Mertesacker just earned himself a place on the bench with a possible MOTM performance. Vermaelen is not going to be dropped and Wenger has just been waiting for the opportunity to put Koscielny back into the side. He chipped in with a class performance too and scored a vital goal to boot. There's no way he's going to sit on the bench after this.

I'd drop Vermaelen. It's Per plus one for me and Kos is comfortably better than Verm. He should have never been made captain, only makes this selection process harder. Should have gone to Jack with Arteta/Sagna taking it in the interim.

I'd drop Vermaelen too but I'm pretty sure Wenger won't. I don't really care as long as Koscielny is starting to be fair. He's the best of the lot and shouldn't sit on the bench.

It doesn't make the selection process harder for Wenger. Only for you, drapes. Vermaelen plays no matter what. He's the only one of the CBs that plays no matter what.
Mert-verm is our best partnership.

Actually, I'm not sure I'd drop Vermaelen the way he's been playing lately. I'd probably pair him with Koscielny. I don't subscribe to the idea that they can't play together.

They were pretty poor together last year. Depends on whether or not Steve Bould has taught them how to defend against a strwight ball over the top.

Vermaelen was poor last season regardless of who he played with.

And whoever's fault it was, the communication with Koscielny last year seemed to be shocking.

Vermaelen made a few mistakes against Montpellier but Mertesacker did too.

Prior to that game they were both excellent in all the games they played this season.

I don't know how people can say Vermaelen was poor.

He had 5-10 minutes against liverpool when he wasn't that great but after that he was just immense. That clearance on the rebound at the death was outstanding.

Agree with Klaus that Kos must play regardless. He's our best CB 1v1, he's the fastest, and he's also the best in possession. Just a monster player.

Mertesacker last season played decently but made mistakes in a number of games. He'd have 89 good minutes and somewhere in between make a mistake which cost us. Villa, Blackburn Chelsea etc. just the top off my head.

But it was exactly the same with Koscielny in his debut season.
