I don't really see Benayoun and Arteta as the same kind of player, so it being either or makes no sense to me. Bu then again, if reports are to be believed we've been trying at everything from dm's and deep lying playmakers via ball playing central midfielders and attacking creative dribblers to outright wingers.

WE seem to have been after Benayoun for a few days and Arteta just today so I'd say Wenger always wanted Benayoun plus a CM.
