If this bloke really is the next Gilberto Silva, as I've heard him described, then we should pay £20 million for him without thinking. A quality defensive midfielder like that will transform a team. And your ability to dictate a game from defensive mid has less to do with your actual passing ability and more to do with the positions you take up.

Gilberto used to boss games from just in front of our back four and he was never the greatest passer. Used to just play it quick and accurate then go and make himself available for a return pass. I remember And Gray doing a piece on Gilberto after we'd beaten Utd at Old Trafford a few years back and the Utd midfield literally couldn't get near him because he took up such great positions. Having a player like that will mean you dominate possession and play higher up the pitch, which is something we've struggled a little bit with so far this season.

Obviously the real test will be how good this lad is defensively, cos that's his bread and butter.

He's strong defensively timbo. Knows how to position himself, has pace and knows how to use his body weight.

M'Vila may not be much better than what we have now but he has the potential to be immense. I think we should go for it, we need a player of his type. I don't think Song is going to cut it for us in the long term.

As usual when it comes to players of M'Vila's age who play outside of the PL I know little if anything of note about them.

Relying on this being an inspired signing, a case of Arsene uncovering a gem of a player who will take us to another level.
Not interested if he's just a makeweight who will help us to tread water.
He'll have little time to settle, we don't have the luxury of being in a strong league position right now and our midfield needs direction and leadership.

No pressure then.

What's his injury history?
Is he one we can count on to last the full season?

Concerned that both Jack and Ramsey are not going to be consistenly available over the season.

True. I dont ever remember Real fans being happy with the sale. The Real Madrid players in particular were disgusted by his departure, especially Zidane who was very vocal about it.

What makes M'Vila's passing mediocre? Because it isn't particularly creative?

I'd call Busquets a very good passer of the ball, he feeds Xavi and Iniesta as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and because of that he usually finds them in a yard of space - and he does it over and over, game after game, with a 90%+ passing average. Is he a mediocre passer because he can't spray the ball around?

We have Jack who is a great short passer of the ball, not many better around, and we have Ramsey, who has great range (you said Jack was only "okay" at this point last season remember?) - now if we can make sure we have forwards that can really hurt teams, we can put that to good use. Hazard's the dream, M'Vila could just be a very useful cog in the machine. And yes, a lot of it is based on the fact that I think Alex Song can be a bit of a donkey.

are you comparing m'vila to busquets? busquets is a great passer. quick, accurate and clever. not at all the impression i get from watching m'vila.

if we are going down the direct route, we need players in midfield who can win the ball and quickly shift from defending to attacking. song is hopeless at this. far too slow on the ball. m'vila doesn't exactly strike me as the next vieira either. that leaves us with wilshere...

imo, we'd be far more direct with ramsey in midfield instead of m'vila or song.

bottom line is: if we play with both song and m'vila in central midfield we will not win anything. we will not even be close to winning anything. not so much because i don't think m'vila is a good player, but rather because i think song is a fucking donkey that hurts the team far more than he helps it and i don't want to see a song/m'vila midfield.

i'm starting to turn to the anti-"song as first XI player" side. think he might just be a good squad player who can fill in at DM and CB for a title-winning side. and that's the only standard that matters.

Too slow in moving the ball forward and when playing the role of the box to box he just isn't good enough and causes more problems. When he plays a disciplined role of sitting in front of the back four he is still very good in my opinion, just that he needs to move the ball faster.

Song basically gets the blame for attacking players not doing their job.
