I just don't think we need a midfield playmaker, and I don't think Wenger will go down that route again. He adapted the team to play that way because Fabregas was a genius, a one off, he won't do that again - it's not his style in my opinion.

I think he wants a solid, strong and athletic midfield, with genuine speed, danger and productivity from the forwards. I think that's the way we will look to build.

If M'Vila is strong, quick, athletic, a reliable quick passer of the ball, who has good understanding of the defensive side of the game, as I'm led to believe he is - he will fit nicely into that system.

I think it's suicide to play with quick wide players like Gervinho and Walcott and not have a playmaker. But anyway, I'm not asking for a direct replacement for Fabregas. I'm asking for players with genuine quality to replace the quality we lost. Hazard is the only one out of that list with genuine quality.

That's where we differ then, because, going by what I've heard others say and the fact that Wenger seems determined to get him, I think M'Vila comes into that category too. Cahill is a quality player too, but I'm not sure whether you were referring to him?

I basically think Cahill, M'Vila and Hazard would be a very good haul for the summer. Gibbs will quickly prove a better player than Clichy for me, so I'm happy there too and don't feel like we've lost out at all. I'm sad we lost Cesc, but I think it's a chance to reshape the team and go with a slightly different tactic, one Wenger is more comfortable with and more adept at winning with.

I think both Cahill and M'Vila are good players, but not great ones, and they would be strengthening the wrong parts of the team.

Klaus, I think we need to strengthen those parts of the team, as well as bring in two creative forwards (eg Hazard and Forlan).

Our central midfield is desperate. We can hardly field a team against United this weekend. It's easy to we won't have Wilshere and Diaby injured and Song and Frimpong suspended simultaneously, but I would expect 1 or2 of those players to be out every week with injury or suspension; and M'Vila is better than 3 of those 4 players.

Central defense: I still think we are underinvesting a little here. We should be aiming for a guy like Subotic who will create an impenetrable shield with Vermaelen for the next 5 or 6 years. However, again, Cahill is definitely better than Squillaci and Djourou, and presently better than Koscielny. Again, that gives us a much more solid top 3 than we have currently.

I think any good player outside right back or goalie added to Arsenal today will significantly strengthen the team. Order or priority is not really that important at this stage, we just need quality.

I disagree. We need a left back too, for instance, but it's not really a priority when you consider that we haven't got a single really creative attacking player apart from van Persie at the moment. Spending a large chunk of transfer money there wouldn't solve the problem we have up front. We're likely to walk away from Old Trafford this weekend with the worst goal difference in Premier League and the unflattering record of being the only team in the top flight that is yet to score.

When we have £60-80m to spend, does the order really matter?

It does if we don't sign any attacking players at all while we spend £25 million on a defensive midfielder that we don't really need.

Yes, I think it could matter too.

Who do we need the most, who will be the most influential and important signing?
Hazard, if we are indeed truly in for him, will probably be the most costly of the names that we've been linked with (assuming that we're not getting Kaka 🙁).
If we bite the bullet and go for him first we'll be paying in the region of £30m plus I reckon
Whatever's left over spend it on Cahill.
If there's anything left after that buy a striker.

One thing has nothing to do with the other though. Not getting Hazard, Kaka, Gotze or whoever would have nothing to do with us managing to get M'Villa, and everything to do with leaving it so fucking late in the transfer window that we were bound to miss out on certain targets.

And, I'd like to thing our multi million pound team of execs can focus on more than one thing at once.

... which means that one thing has everything to do with the other.

Besides, do you honestly think we're in for another central midfielder if we break our transfer record for M'Vila? Not a chance.

They haven't done a single thing right so far this summer. Do you really expect them to sign the 4-5 players we need in the last four days of the transfer window?

Maybe I'm being daft, but I fail to see how not signing M'Vila will suddenly make Hazard or whoever else more attainable.

They're doing plenty I'm sure but the constraints seem to be so great that to actually complete any signing, let alone two or three, in the time that's left seems uncertain.

Sometimes we just have to accept that to get the player we want will cost more than we want to pay or even more than is reasonable?
I'm not saying we do an Andy Carroll but we can't afford to waste this time, if it means paying more than budgeted so be it.

I don't see how we don't want the midfield shored up. Ever since 2008 the central midfield has been one of our weak spots. When Song broke through he solved a lot of those issues, but without him (and even with him sometimes) it easily looks too lightweight. So I personally think that a player like M'vila who - as far as I've heard! - can both aid us as a ball-winning and defensive midfielder and also pick a pass and assist us going forward would be exactly what we need. That does not mean he is the only thing we need or that he is even the most important thing, but just that I think he'd solve a lot of problems.
In a perfect world, we'd get someone like Montolivo too, simply to aid our creativity going forward, which is lacking.

losing cesc and nasri means we have lost a lot of creativity in this side. with rvp leading the attack that leaves us with wilshere. he can't carry this team alone. we need more creativity both in central midfield and on the wings.

Kel, this is true. We need more creativity with the losses of Fabregas and Nasri.
But we needed more steel in midfield while those two were still here, and have done nothing to address that other than promote a promising but raw Frimpong. We are relatively more desperate in attack given the recent losses of Fabregas and NAsri; but the defensive midfield need remains
