I expect you're right about who will eventually be better, but part of the problem at Arsenal is that we have emphasized the future too much at Arsenal. Take Sczscnzy for example. He's a fantastic goalkeeper, but I would not be surprised that we persisted with Almunia as long as we did because we did not see value in bringing in another goalie while the Pole developed. I'm absolutely happy to have him now as our goalie, but think we missed out in the last few years.
This is why for now, I am very happy to bring in some older central midfielders, even a Scotty Parker, to hold down the fort until Frimpong and Coquelin are ready. Even with Parker on board, someone like Frimpong will still get plenty of opportunities to impress and develop, but our destiny won't be in the hands of a raw teenager

I haven't said that we should put our faith in Coquelin this season though. I've just said that I think he's going to be a better player than M'Vila in a year or two, soon as he has some more first team experience. Ideally he'll spend this season on loan somewhere again.

I don't think Parker is where we should aim either. We should aim at Schweinsteiger, Banega, Kagawa. That bracket of players. We've got cash in abundance right now. If we pay over the top we will get a player that good.

I too would like to see a Schweinsteiger, Banega or Kagawa but just worry our manager will balk at the asking prices. Don't forget that teams know that we are sitting on cash from Citeh and Barca, so will try to squeeze us. That could scare Wenger into a slightly lower level of player. I am confident he will buy good players, just worry that he will be scared out of the very best players whose wages we could afford.

But that fault is Wenger's if that's the case. In that sense I'd be all for signing M'Vila since it's obviously better than not signing anyone at all. It doesn't mean that we should be content with underwhelming signings when we've just let our best players go though. We need creative players rather than defensive midfielders at the moment.

Agree that the priority is creative players, some combination of players like Hazard, Gotze, Montolivo, Kagawa, Martin, Forlan etc. Two such players would make a big difference.

Bring those guys in, and hopefully, financial fair play will save us from future instances of Citeh just swooping in and taking those players from us.

Thats why he should have bought early into the transfer window and wrap up the replacements before we sold Cesc and Nasri. Even if one of them stayed, we would just have another quality midfielder in the team.

Wenger will now have to pay more to get the replacements since teams roughly know our budget and no one is willing to sell in the end of the transfer window because they wouldn't have enough time for replacements

M'Vila played for Rennes tonight in the qualifying round of the Europa League and is now cup-tied for the group stages of the Champions League. Not a guarantee that the stories of a €25M bid are false, but probably a good indicator that they are.

gilberto was more dynamic than people give him credit for. remember that quick goal he scored in the CL against, i think, PSV? he was a real threat on corners and set pieces, too. great character, too. a lot of these french players lately seem to be deficient in that regard - a generation of knobs.

I've seen a good number of people suggest that M'Vila would be captain material at Arsenal and for the national team within a couple of seasons. Obviously has something about him personality wise.

Pretty sure a Champions league club can register a certain number of players (1, or 2) that played in the Europa qualifiers.

Aye it wouldn't be an issue. We can register one player who played in the Europa League.

We can register one new player who has played in another Uefa competition, but not until January.

Capi, although that's true, technically he didn't become a cup-tied player until tonight, when his team qualified. But I suppose if there was no bid on the table at the time of the first leg and a bid has since materialised, then him playing last night tells you even less.

10.56am: David Hytner's been fraternising with Arsene Wenger this morning and tells us that Thomas Vermaelen remains a doubt for Arsenal's clash with Manchester United. And Wenger is confident of signing M'vila. A fine recruit he would be, too. He has a midfield presence beyond his 21 years and is a ball-winning midfield who can actually do more than just tap it to a more talent team-mate to create: his passing is swift and shrewd.

Cahill and M'vila are your brickwork signings; good. Time to get something at the top end, Kaka, Hazard, Anelka or whoever.

I'm worried we won't get anything in the creative end. I just can't see it if we spend £30-35 million on players like M'Vila and Cahill.
