To be fair, M'Vila has actually talked about this himself. Says he needs to concentrate on making sure he's as good and as effective as he can be at winning the ball back and giving it to the better players as quickly as he can. Also that this season he's tried to do a bit too much to help his team out offensively, looked for the killer ball too often.

If I find the quote I'll post it. He definitely gets it though. Understands that his job is not to make goals but to stop them going in.

alonso is not and has never been an aggressive, mobile ball winner. and it would be churlish to suggest mvila's passing is on xabi's level, because there are few in world football on that level. he won't be the type to pick apart a packed defense, but he will make us a more effective counter-attacking unit, and can win the ball and deliver it quickly and accurately to the flanks or an advanced AM.

i must admit i've been an advocate of getting someone strong who closes the ball down intelligently and aggresively, so i'm biased towards this deal. song simply isn't that player anymore, and i think wenger realises that.

If we had makelele we would walk the league. Our main problem is defending without the ball and that is his speciality

M´Vila CAN play the long ball from deep. He is actually pretty good at it IMO. I find it strange to watch Rennes attack though. It is all about dribbling and looking for the shot. There is very little structure.
Here, I can see M´Vila releasing speedy players like Walcott, Gervinho, Ryo, AOC down either flank with decent regularity.

I've been told that Anotnetti, the Rennes manager, has instructed M'Vila to play more offensively this season. So it's not by choice that he's hit a lot more long balls and Hollywood passes. As I said above, he's been quoted as saying he likes to keep it as simple as possible.

Mvila: "I never felt the need to dribble or do tricks, not even ball-juggling. I've always loved playing simply. Control, pass, mark."

We may need this, another player who actually likes defending. We have zero LBs who like defending, half of our starting CBs acts more like a support striker, not a single CM when Arteta is out who wants to defend. I bet even Sneezey deep down wants to be a striker. 🙂

Apart from Sagna, Mertesacker, Arteta and Kos we don´t really have anyone who doesn´t treat defending like a chore and an afterthought. Now we are down to Kos of all those.

@Orbinho Yann M'Vila has managed just three shots on target all season in Ligue 1 and two assists. Definitely a defensive player.

Sorry Ricky—I know you'll be disappointed, but going forward he's no Alex Song. 😉

I share Asa's scepticism. Don't like the quoted price either when you keep in mind that we're in serious need of another good attacking signing. But we do need another holding player. At this point I'm just glad that we're looking for one, instead of leaving it tunil the last day of the transfer window.

Would M'Vila even start for us? The only position he could really play in the current midfield is the one occupied by Arteta, and I think we'll be a lesser team if he gets a game over him. As a backup he'd be handy to have around though.

IF we go for M´Vila, then I will be surprised that Wenger didn´t go with Coquelin instead. He looks to have everything M´Vila has, and more, within himself but needs a year or two of development to fulfill his potential.

Still feels like a hefty transfer fee for a defensive midfielder for a Wenger signing. As Capi says though - at 21 with good re sale value it may not be that far fetched.

and that's what we need to stop doing. we don't have 2 years. coq can get his 2 years development time and then kick someone else out of the team in two years. no more clearing paths for players.

Oh I agree Meaty. It just doesn´t seem like the Wenger thing to do.

And I think it is important that we hang on to Coquelin. Think he can be top, top class CM.

Wasnt the same thing said when eboue had just had a great season and wenger splashed out on sagna, i fear wenger is planning on occasionally using song ahead of mvila and arteta similar to how city use yaya. Due to his high assist count

I just want quality players, as many as we can get of them, right throughout the squad.

Clear the crap out, and get a squad Wenger can compete with (not interested in hearing about how it wouldn't matter because Wenger's a "turnip" any way).

Difference is that Eboue was a defensive liability whereas Arteta is probably our second best player this season behind Robin.

It's shame Frimpong went down; has the ingredients to do a great job for us but needed the game time he would have gotten at Wolves.
