I'm surprised anyone can think we don't need a signing like this. Last year we did not win any games in the absence of Alex Song, who was our deepest midfielder for most of the season. This year we cannot buy a win without Mikel Arteta who performs a similar role.
More than the individual abilities of those two players, we need someone else who can keep the team ticking over and making sure the base is secure for the forward players. Going by what people say about him, M'vila is that player.

We break our transfer record for a...defensive midfielder?
I'm sure we've spent more money on the defence than the attack in the past few years.
Maybe a shift towards actually getting our defensive problems in order? A step in the right direction. If you can't hold onto one goal leads then you are in big trouble and for many years now we have struggled even with 2, 3 and sometimes 4 goal leads!
Yes, but we've taken this step a long time ago. Every summer for the last three we've brought a new centre back or two, this is the first time we're buying a new defensive minded midfielder though.
