Not really the same thing though. He explained that comment by saying that he expected the player to stay since there were no improved offer from Barca at the moment. He spoke all summer about Cesc "being torn between two loves" and admitted several times that he wasn't sure whether he'd stay or not.

Absolutely. The way we've acted this summer pisses me off. We should have sorted out a deal with a replacement before we let Cesc go. Or at least with another class signing in another position, like Hazard or whoever. The fact alone that we're having this discussion in a thread about a DM when we've just sold the most creative midfielder in the world is a bit sad. Pissing away money on M'Vila would be criminal at the moment.

Klausie, let's play fantasy football. I'm tired of our reality.
Let's assume we went into the summer with 30M pounds solely for transfer fees, and can afford no more than 10m pound increase in salaries. Let's also assume Nasri is joining Fabregas, Eboue and Clichy, so we've got 22+35+3+7 = 67m. We've spent 12+12+1+1 = 26 on Ox, Gerv, Jenk and Campbell. That's 70m pounds to spend, and we are about 4m down in salaries, I'd say. (all approximate)

So you have 70M pounds to spend, and can take on salaries of 10 - 14m pounds a season. What do you do this week?

Nah, let's not. I'm so tired of wish lists and escapism. None of it has any bearing on what's happening in the real world anyway. I've said all along that I wanted attacking reinforcements this summer, even before we had sold anyone. I reckon we need two or three top class players at the moment that can give the team some edge - and that's provided that Nasri actually stays. It's not up to me to scout them or sign them. I just want the players, and I want them now.

I'm working from the assumption that we're not going to secure any top class signings at the moment. Who would want to lose their best players this late in the window? We might pick up Cahill I suppose, but he's hardly what I'd describe as a top player. I don't think he'd even start for us.

Seriously though - I've admitted several times already that Chamakh didn't work out. I'd still take the Chamakh that was so loved at Bordeaux, the one that performed so well for us for the first half of last season, any day. That's not the Chamakh we currently have though. I'm at a loss to explain his decline. Only players I've seen waste away at a similar rate are Arshavin and Mendieta. It's yet another thing that pisses me off about our transfer dealings, by the way. Not only have we not signed someone better than Chamakh - we sent Vela on loan to Spain and got rid of the only in-house option that looked like he could have replaced him in the pecking order.

Klausie, I look at the numbers I put up, and believe that we can go for two superior players of over 25M pounds each, pay each 120,00 pounds a week and still have money to spare. That should be our target. Two players who will reassure fans and players. Two players who can make a difference in the way that Suarez and Aguero make a difference for their teams. That's what we need and that's all Wenger should be focused on

I'm surprised Wenger's not sent a posse to Spain to check out the la Liga players who haven't been paid for months.

They're bound to be tempted by the thought that we can actually pay wages so they may not be too demanding on that front 🙂

They're probably too average though, super quality usually gets paid at the end of each week.

At this point a purely defensive mid would be low on my list of priority signings. We need some creativity and cutting edge as a matter of urgency. I wouldn't mind a central midfielder with a bit of creativity, to take the burden off Ramsey and Wilshere (when he comes back), someone that's gonna put his foot on the ball and release our forwards.

Tim, you're right. Our primary concern right now is a playmaker, someone who can bring van Persie, Walcott and Arshavin into the game. All three were woeful on Saturday, and they would have been improved by better service. The lack of a good playmaker is diminishing at least 3 other players.

Losing 1 playmaker is like losing 4 players overall.

Spanish teams aren't even playing. We should go in there and sweep up Forlan and Banega. Put Hazard in there and we're laughing. Wenger can then put in a 15m pound bid for both Cahill and Jagielka and see which team blinks first

Been trying to figure out why the hell we are seemingly bidding for M'Vila considering we already have Song and Frimpong who play there.

Wenger has always said he sees Song playing at Centre Back in the long term. So unless he's planning to move Song back into defense and replace him with M'Vila in the midfield to save himself having to buy a new CB.

Seems a ridiculous workaround but makes a certain Wengeresque sense...

L'equipe are saying we've increased our bid to €25m. The guy must be incredible if that's true.

His thinking may be to replace Cesc with Wilshere/Ramsey and replace Wilshere/Ramsey with M'Vila.

We certainly need a third strong man. I've given up on Diaby. That leaves Song and Frimpong. Both are suspended, the former is purely defensive and the latter is bit naive on defense. A third man with experience and two-way ability in central midfield would be useful.
