can't believe a bunch of kids could turn a city like london on its head in this manner. they need to get control of this fast because the message they are sending to these losers is that they can kick off some shit anytime they feel like they need free stuff. crack some skulls already.

I think it's more than that. There are criminal elements taking advantage of unrest, but there must be some youth who are just disaffected. I don't know these guys, but I bet they're angry about employment opportunities, policiing, influx of immigrants, among other things. They're just using this as an opportunity to let it all out, and are hoping that there is enough strength in numbers that it will be hard to attach responsibility to individuals.

You do not want to shoot them as that will just lead to acts of violence against police in future. Just bring some tanks through London and cats will act right.

Shooting the rioters would probably terrify and quell the least dangerous, and might even temporarily stop the riots. But it'd mobilise the most dangerous to organise worse acts of violence in time.

Precisely, it's not like guns or excessive force have stopped riots in the past. A death, any death, and it'll give people a genuine reason to protest. Some of these rioters are no more than 9 years old.

I've just caught up on the news. I feel for the police because there's no way they're going to be able to spread themselves out over the entire city, particularly since those thugs don't care where they hit and seem to move from place to place.

Opening fire would further create tensions but at this point too many people have had their homes affected to consider the feelings of those on the riots. Honestly though, the majority of those out there aren't out to make any political point or try and fight for their rights or anything remotely admirable. They probably don't expect this to last any more than we do and are just taking advantage of the panic. Fire some tear gas and have a couple of Alsatians snap at their heels, get the army to maintain a presence and they'll soon realise the game is up.

Let's not kid ourselves, a lot of people are there to make a political point (may be not the majority but a fair few), they hate the "feds".

I'd hate to think what would happen if a 9 year old was shot dead by the police.

Aside from which any stray bullets or brutality resulting in unjustifiable deaths at the hands police may cost the state millions of pounds up front.

De Menezes cost a multi-million pound inquest and a comparatively modest legal settlement that still ran into six figures.

Looks absolutely mental out there. Have friends in Whitechapel, Walthamstow, Elephant and Castle, and Bow-- all of whom have said that it's kicked off near them.

I said this elsewhere, but I can understand why riots happen (people on the dole with no future feel that they don't have anything to lose if they do this). But this is absolutely ridiculous. They're destroying peoples' lives, and these people need to understand that what they're doing has a far further reach than harassing police and taking a few things from a store.

Apparently the Turkish community in Dalston had a go at the kids who were trying to loot their stores, and the kids fucked right off. I just don't understand why the police don't bring out the water cannons and the tear gas.

Apparently there are no water canons in mainland Britain and it's illegal to use them here. No really. They are all in Northern Ireland, and it's legal to use them there.
