Yes, of course, but they wouldn't represent good value if they weren't quality footballers. Cahill for sub £10M later in the window as Bolton start to panic and we wouldn't be doing badly.

I know it wasn't your point, but I would have rather paid the extra £5m or whatever a month ago and had him here for pre-season.

Yeah, maybe, I would have too, but then again I'm not trying to run a football club and don't have to care about whether the wages get paid on time and the other overheads are met, etc.

If we just get players of the quality of Mata and Cahill in this window, I'll be happy. Shame it looks like it's going to be at the expense of Cesc and Nasri.

I would like to think that the number one concern is the have the best players possible and make their transition into the squad as smooth as possible. We aren't talking about anything astronomical here, £5m is really not a huge amount for us.

But anyway, coming back to the thread; I've been moaning about our wide forwards for years and the fact we look to have gone and bought two pleases me greatly. Time to address other areas.

The Express are saying the buy-out clause could be as low as £13.2M as well:

The buyout clause for Mata is £17.5m but in reality the clause with the Valencia club could drop to £13.2m.

They're also stating the obvious, in saying Mata would much rather move to Arsenal over Tottenham.

I love the thought of entering next season with Gervinho and Mata strengthening the attack. If this goes through I expect Nasri to be gone soon though.

hopefully wenger is finally starting to see some sense. getting rid of denilson, eboue and nasri, and bringing in gervinho and mata is not too bad of a window. just need to work on chamakh and almunia now.

Chamakh deserves a 2nd season. If Chamakh had maintained his form throughout the season, he would have been quite valuable.

Mata in would be great. I'd certainly get rid of nasri and use that money to get the centreback we want or a midfielder

The thing about mata that appeals is that he is truly versatile and can do just as good a job as playmaker or wide man. Great for options. He also seems like a guy who thrives on the bigger stage and who could be a talisman

If we keep Nasri instead of selling him there's no 'excess' money to be had.

I agree, but nor had Campbell, apart from being a great player (that was the original special case I was thinking of - didn't he come in on well above our highest earner at the time?).

Completely in agreement that we can't afford to make Nasri a special case, or to let him leave on a free. I was just saying that if you think one more season of Nasri is worth _£20m, why not massively boost his wages and get 2-4 more seasons?

Chamakh is simply not good enough to take RVP's place when he isn't available or injured. I don't mind him being the third choice though. If preseason is any indicator he surely has not learnt anything and in fact looks to have lost weight further from his already skinny frame .

Have a feeling that we'll try and get either a deal for Mata or another CB done before the weekend. Being able to unveil someone like Mata/Cahill at The Emirates Cup would be good PR and would probably help raise some morale among supporters.
