cal, i guess i dont see the adjustment as being that difficult. the english league isnt as english as it used to be, there are plenty of foreign players who've done great here since day one. if we somehow finish below liverpool or spurs, it won't be because mata is no better than eboue for half the year (like nasri was).

it's not like we're losing vieira or pires in their prime. nasri had 1 assist last year. i'd be shocked if a 20m acquisition couldnt replace that level of performance.

you really think hazard would be a step down from nasri? obviously nasri is currently playing at a higher level of competition so it's hard to compare, but based on their time in ligue 1 i don't see the step down. in fact hazard is more accomplished.

That's fair. Will see. I like Nasri a lot and think there is more to come from him. I see definite improvements in his game each season, and doubt we have seen the best of him. I'd like him to stay and keep improving with us. It would break my heart to see him blossom at one of the Mancunian clubs. It's just so painful to see this summer turning into one where we are desparetely holding on to players. At this rate, I'd like to hold on to Denilson.

haha lets not get crazy. i get where you're coming from, nasri is definitely talented. but in terms of replacing him, we only have to replace what he actually did last season, and not what he might do in the future, since what he does in the future will likely not be at arsenal, anyway.

i do agree that the best outcome would be for him to re-sign. but i'm not a fan of these rooney-ish tactics - while i didnt really like nasri to begin with, he definitely won't be getting any affection from me now, even if he re-signs.

Well Cal the only way that I can see us hanging on to him longer term is not by backing Wenger, it's- Wenger going and being replaced by a less miserly manager who Nasri respects and trusts to make a proper effort to strengthen the team.
And I don't think thats very likely to happen, it's too late- but you never know

He also scored 10 goals from midfield. A midfield in which he was not supposed to be the main man.. we won't find many players for 20m who can replace that level of performance.

For me, his contribution to our play in terms of ball possession, and his ability to beat his man was as crucial as his goals and assists (or lack thereof), and that aspect of his game is what I think his critics are greatly underestimating.

Also, we can see that the kid is improving and maturing, and as he gets better the team can only get better, so how does it make any sense to advocate selling him now?

We don't know enough about what's happening to accuse Nasri of Rooneyism. All we know is that he asked for wages that are arguably less than his market value, we turned him down, he talked to one or two other clubs and was offered astronomical amounts, and now he's understandably wondering why we won't even meet in the middle.

I know if I could jump ship for more than twice what I currently earn, there would be a 99% chance of me doing so unless I would utterly trash my professional reputation in the process.

I really want him to stay and sign a new contract, I think he is talented enough for us to just offer him the 120k he wants. I have since changed my mind on that matter after watching his talents on the pitch again.

Then again, still think its pointless to keep him and then let him leave on a free next year.

That's another point being sadly understated. Is there any reason to suspect that Nasri won't keep on developing next season?

No reason at all to suspect that Nasri won't keep developing and improving next season.
His form tailed off after Christmas last season so on form alone it's not unreasonable to think that maintaining a high level for an entire season would automatically be a great improvement.

True, Y Va. There is also just the issue of using his full toolbox. He can pass. He needs to do more work setting up other players. Perhaps being in form at the same time as van Persie would help him rack up more assists as well. And then there's just using his trickery to take on defenders more. He needs to feel confident enough to constantly skin opposing fullbacks, and destabilize the opposition defense. These are things I can see him working on

he's an asshole, anyway. there are so many players like him, there's no reason to fixate on him. i mean, if gotze were an arsenal player, we'd be jizzing on our keyboards, too.

you guys make it sound like if we sold him, there's no possible way we could possibly replace him, and we'd all regret it forever. i honestly doubt that.

Gotze isn't an Arsenal player, Kami. That's the point. It's not like we're busy going around shelling out money for good to great players. After we puffed our chests and made a lot of noise about transfers, the sum of our big summer is Gervinho. I do not trust Wenger to bring in good players, so might as well hold on to this cat Nasri
