I am not suggesting United are rigid and i don't think even we are.
United too stood firm when the Rooney saga unfolded last season, it wasn't as if they gave into his demands immediately despite Rooney's massive contributions to their successes in the preceding seasons. Those may have simply been negotiating tactics or simply an assertion of the club's supremacy over players but United did hold out even though the whole incident was resulting in bad PR and could have had an impact on team morale.
What i was trying to imply was that they wouldn't have really entertained unreasonable demands from Rooney in the middle of the 2006/07 season. The player contributes to the success of the club and gets rewarded for it. I am not saying Nasri's demands are unreasonable and I am certain that Nasri would have been paid whatever he asked for had he taken responsibility when the team needed him the most. The club would have shown all flexibility.
I don't know who earns what really and conjecturing doesn't help but this entire issue can't simply be looked at from Nasri's point of view. Salaries are relative not just in the whole world of football but moreso within the team. If Nasri were to get a raise, a number of other players would be justified in feeling they deserve one too. This is not about a ceiling but the entire structure. We give in to Nasri's demand of £ 110,000/ week, some other player would think he is as deserving as Nasri based on performance and that will skew the entire structure.
I would be extremely angry at the club not taking care of Nasri if he had scored or won us the Carling Cup final in the absence of Cesc and RVP, had he lifted his game in the second half of the season, but he didn't.
I am hoping though that he stays and fulfills his massive potential with us.
