Great piece of trivia there from Hussain. If Pietersen gets 24 runs ahead of Cook in this innings they will both have the same number of test runs and same average. He's currently 16 ahead in the innings and 8 behind overall from 2 more matches.

Umpire is there to give the decisions. Always baffled by the fact that walking is seen as the right thing to do, but nobody cares that fielding teams are always appealing when they know its not out. Sangakarra and Murali used to appeal for literally everything.

Agreed. I've always understood that you're out when the umpire gives you out and the umpire didn't give him out. Noone says anything about the fielding team appealing when they no its not out. Still a bit poor from Broad though as it was a massive edge. Terrible from the umpire. Knew that LBW might come back to haunt them though. It was miles down the leg side, someone should have said there was no point reviewing. You see it was nowhere near live and before the replays David Lloyd said something like "that wasn't even hitting the next set of stumps." Anyway these things tend to have a funny way of evening themselves out over a series, often even a match. The day before we had Trott given out by the 3rd umpire without the 3rd umpire technology being available.

Happy with the lead although it's starting to look quite easy for batting so I'd like to get it to 300 before feeling fairly safe. Very jealous of you Tim you've got a fantastic day to look forward to tomorrow, could even be the conclusion to the match. How did you swing this with the new arrival anyway? 😉

"DRS was brought in to correct obviously wrong decisions and that is how captains should use it. Alastair Cook does just that, he is very sparing with it, and hopefully Michael Clarke does the same after this. To me, it has to be the umpire [fault]. A player is allowed to stand his ground. If Australia had one appeal left, Broad would have walked. The fact there was no referral left, he left it up to the umpire.

So Trott's dismissal was the upside of 3 gambles with LBW reviews and Broad still being there is the downside of that.

Also Geoffrey Boycott makes a good point.

I don't see bowlers asking you back when the ball is sliding down leg. There is no debate, it's quite simple. The Australians I have played with and have watched, with the exception of Adam Gilchrist, believe in standing and it's up to the umpire to give you out - there shouldn't be a morale argument.

Tickets for the Australia series at the end of the year go on sale this week. Looking at going over for a couple of days of the Boxing Day test with my brother. Always been a dream of ours to go to an Ashes test so now we've both got money and no dependents we may aswell do it. Could be 2 trips to Melbourne within a few weeks as I'm also going for the Australian Open in January!

The fielding argument is just wrong - that they appeal even web it's not out. The difference is they don't know for sure that it is not out. They may appeal for unlikely shouts but they know the umpire is in the better position to see it. With batsmen it's different. At club level, you know if you've nicked it. If its a thin nick, you won't feel it but you will hear it.

international players have a bit of leeway in that the crowd must make a lot of noise. Also a noise might've been bat-pad or something and so you are not 100% sure. When it's a big edge - and this was - then you do know 100%. This was an anomaly because these sorts of decisions don't happen that often. Broad should've walked. To compare this with rubbish appeals and batsmen not walking generally is missing the point; there is normally some doubt in the player's mind.

Fair enough, there's no way he didn't know he hit it. Still think it's up to the umpire to give you out though. These things have a funnny way of always evening themselves out so he'll probably get screwed in the next innings.

Wow. Beamer for 5 no-balls first ball from Starc! Clarke at slip was diving out of the way. That's outdone the Harmison ball.

Heh, Broad edges between 1st and 2nd slip for 4 for his 50. Simple catch and both Clarke and Watson just looked at each other. That's taking the piss!

So 311 the target with plenty of time to get them. Shame Bell got out, would have liked to get it to 350. Hopefully Swann can make an impact and it's enough.

Chris Rogers has 5000 more first class runs than the nearest player in this match and this is only his 2nd test.

Aussies go to Tea requiring 200 more and have 8 wickets in hand. The next two wickets are really crucial. Clarke needs to play a captain's innings here. Game on!

187 runs with 8 wickets in hand...doesn't seem like mission impossible. BUT it very, very rarely works out in the batting side's favour.

It won't be easy to score from here on. Swann needs to start doing some damage, enough there for him.

Brilliant last session. I must say I was very worried at tea, thought we were probably 50 runs short. Effectively Agar's innings from 117-9 was the difference. But those wickets late on were much needed. Great bowling from Swann, he should be very important on Day 5. Fancy him to clean them up. Wonder if Clarke using that last review when he edged behind will come back to bite them when they need to review one and can't. That Hughes wicket was pretty much the entire reason for DRS and Hawk Eye. To the naked eye live it looked like it may have just pitched outside, but it is more than half the ball and the technology showed it just made it in by a seam. The equivalent of catching the edge of the line in tennis.
