His mentality is totally different. His body is different too in fairness; he has lost a lot due to his injuries, and he is pushing 40. Almost 40 percent of his shots are threes, which means he is nowhere near as aggressive as the Mamba used to be. The whole Lakers season is basically one long farewell to Kobe affair rather than a sporting event. The Lakers are crap, they have known all along they won't be anywhere close to making the playoffs - and everyone seems ok with that, weirdly enough. In every town the Lakers come to Kobe is cheered throughout the games. This is weird, because he used to be absolutely hated everywhere, because mostly he used to kill their teams! It is a nice gesture, of course, but it is only there really because a game against the Lakers has mostly been a foregone conclusion this season.

His percentage is down because defenders don't have to worry too much that he is going to beat them off the dribble. They get much tighter to him than they ever could before. He has decent nights when his fade away jumper works for him it seems.

Not in my mind. You have Brady and Montana who obviously are right up there with him. But beyond that, who goes over Peyton?

Favre has great longevity yet Manning has him beat in every major category including passing yards (barely), TD's, MVP's and rings.

Elway was a rock but lacked Peytons finesse and skillset and has only the one league MVP to Peytons five.

Marino had it in his locker to be the best ever, but although you can't put everything on team achievements, he only made the one SuperBowl, which he lost. In the all-time great discussion, that stuff matters.

Then you have guys with more rings than Peyton like Aikman and Staubach who wasn't close to the player Peyton was.

For me the top 3 is Brady, Montana, Peyton in that order.

Any of you American football fans seen the documentary 'League of denial'? To me, it is totally incomprehensible how any parent would ever let their kid be involved in American football.

It's an incredibly dangerous sport, no doubt about it. If you want to be great and make big plays you have to have little regard for your own safety. But that's part of what makes it a captivating sport to watch. They truly are modern gladiators.

If I had kids I probably wouldn't let them play either. At least not the most dangerous positions (running back, offensive and defensive linemen, linebackers.)

Jens, I'm talking about the head injuries. Studies show that all the clashes that occur regularly during training and games are extremely dangerous, with long term effects, even for kids who end playing at high school level.

I know you were talking about head injuries, which are a very real and very serious part of the sport. I'm only saying there's a big difference in the occurance of helmet-to-helmet clashes based on which position you play on the field. If you're in the trenches as a lineman, you're gonna collide with a 300 pound man fifty times a game, whereas as a wide reciever you're a lot luckier. It's not so much like a parent wanting his kid to play striker and score goals as it is wanting your kid to be a radio operator or a medic rather than a front liner if he's going to war.

😆 Yeah, NFL would be totally safe if everyone were kickers. It would make the game totally pointless, but yet, still more entertaining than cricket.

a wide receiver going across the middle is probably the most dangerous play in the sport.
